It seems that support and help should already be there from US and other countries Canada appears to have always been self sufficient and it is now they need help and should have been there yesterday.

True, true. Haven't heard a sound from our 'brothers from another mother' to the south.

I agree! Remember after 9/11 when all flights were diverted from the U. S.? Guess who let planes land and who took Americans into their homes in the hundreds. Sorrowful that we are not the FIRST to jump in to help!

Mr. Obama, if you ever read this, be ready to get PO'd! Your government has the resources to help the displaced, like we did for you guys in 2001 and again during Hugo, Andrew AND Katrina. Where are you? I'm ashamed to be a member of the same race as you right now. No wonder my family left the States in 1850 to come up here. We actually care for others.

Good Questions Big. Canada does help a lot of other countries and I don't think we ever ask for anything back. 1600 homes and businesses....GONE....could cost up to $6,000,000,000 in insurance claims and that probably won't be enough to get people's lives back to some kind of normal. Who know how long these people are going to be out of work or will ever return to the city they love. It's a tragedy and it ain't over yet.

We don't know what lies ahead for the area. The fire may reach the petroleum processing facilities yet too. THEN what??

Too much to think about

I know, but if we want change to happen, we need to be i the forefront of that change.

They seem to think Canadians are superhuman, but thats not the case.
Just human, enough to need help like everyone else......

You are a saint, Therese. It must really bother you, being both Swiss and Canadian, to see what's happening.

Yes, it does, and no, no saint.....
Just human........

Still a saint in my eyes. I may be old (75), but I still recognize one when I see one. Luv ya. Be blessed and well.

Thanks so much, Ian!
And the same to you..........

I say to Hell with it! Open the boarders and send Help to them Now. Let the people decide, not the politician.

I think part of the problem is that 'wealthy' countries are thought to be able to get problems like this under control..
But, expertise and some helping hands from any country could help in a situation like this.
BTW I'm surprised the US hasn't sent any firefighters North...maybe they have?
David

'Wealthy countries' have been on the receiving end of Canadian largesse a lot lately. China, the States, both have been aided by us, yet we see nothing in return, except for the donations coming in to the Red Cross from the US, UK and Israel.

The other day I said y duz Donald Trump wanna put walls up to prevent illegal aliens coming in2 America on the Mexican border? Y don't he use the money to aid Canada for the wildfires. I wish I had money to help.

I understand the red tape that exists, prevents Australian firefighters from coming to help without official requests. It is a shame that help isn't provided so quickly. In Australia, the majority of fire fighters who fight bush/wild fires are volunteers, not full timers.
Bureaucracy can be a real impediment to helping the needy. It is a statement of our world.

I completely agree with you, and with Jude. It must be really terrible for those poor people in Canada, and surely the rest of the world can offer them some help? It really is their moral duty, but what price morals in this world today?

So true

This kind of thing gets me too. In the UK we send billions of pounds abroad and yet when we have heavy flooding in the north of the country, three times in a short space of time and people have lost everything, then who comes to our aid?

Say that, Sis. We sent over a billion dollars in aid to the States for Katrina relief. This disaster threatens to be a whole lot worse considering where the fire is. The Americans SHOULD pony up. It's their oil that is at stake. They buy most of the tar sands product. I say they get nothing until the town is back on its feet and producing. No production until then. See who helps then.
