Keeping a Rant Under Wraps

I'm not going on a rant, I want to, but it won't do any good. besides, I went on a rant this afternoon and scared my poor cat-she thought I was yelling at her.

I'm not the brightest lamp in the room about computers, especially when we start rummaging in the back room and in the cellar. I have purposely left off finishing Number 5 in the lessons because I knew it would drive me around the bend.

I persuaded myself it was time to finish up- I've been here long enough. I finished getting Analytics up a year ago, but never took on Search Console, becauseI I knew it would be a hassle.

This makes day two that I have been wrestling with this and I'm not done yet. I read the lesson, watched the video, wrote all my notes, spent half a day finding analytics, read everything google had to say about putting all this together, went through installation I don'tknow how many times- every time came up the same- not verified.

Read some more notes-google is nothing if not wordy- so last night I was ready to give up when I stumbled on a little note that said something to the effect, if I was on WordPress it had to be done another way. So, I went to wordpress and WP said all I needed was a plugin!

Why in the H--wasn't I told that way back there, somewhere. So, this morning, after I played the piano for two hours, I started again. Got the plugin installed-no problem there- ready to install analytics and search console.

Couldn't complete the installation-the two ? oh I don't even remember-something about an association. I read some more in google about associating analytcs and search Console- I have no idea what they are talking about--might as well be in Greek. I'm through--they are installed--they aren't working- but they are installed.

My rant? Oh--Stop telling us in evey new lesson or tutorial that : this won't take long, it's real easy, shouldn't take more than a few minutes, and you're on your way, etc.etc. Even the tutorials- whaever it is --it's not 4 easy steps-- it may be for you, but for some of us it's just four steps.

Everytime I see : This will only take a few minutes, it's easy---I cringe - because I know that's just not true.

By the way, I'm not stupid, I can read music and get my fingers in the right places on the piano. I can put words together. I'm just not savvy in computer. So don't say it's easy, it will only take a few minutes.

It's another nightmare for me.

Hi Barbara
As musicians, we spent many thousands of hours practising over the years in order to become accomplished. My first instrument was violin... so like you with the piano, I know what it takes. I understand the piano from learning to write music, but I've never practised so can't even pretend to play it!

I've also taken a close interest in brain and mind development over time. Accomplished musicians do indeed have enlarged brains. Areas where there are many more neurological connections than non-musicians. This is also true of many other disciplines such as chess masters, traditional London taxi drivers and surgeons to name a few.

I started working with computers in the mid-70s so I've had thousands of hours there as well. In the same way that you make piano playing look easy those of us with long time computing experience tend to make it look easy as well. When we communicate we tend to think it is easy, because we forget the many hours it took to get up to scratch.

Understanding building websites, SEO, all the techy stuff, In reality, take the same kind of dedication that it took us to learn to play a musical instrument. Having said that, I often have to figure new things out on a computer, but usually, I can do it because of my historical experience.

The big difference between music and computing is that a musical instrument has a limited number of functions (although of course, we can learn many different styles the techy stuff is all similar) while a computer has many possible functions, each of which is easy, but there are many to learn! Also I think that getting our heads around digital concepts, that seem to be in the ether takes a paradigm shift or two. A small mistake can lead us into a labyrinth of rabbit holes, A place from which we don't know how to escape at times. A small mistake in music often goes unnoticed except to another musician.

All I'm doing is empathising with you on this. Just ask when you need to.
:-)

Richard,
I appreciate you taking time to share your knowledge of music and its peculiarities with what I call computerize. I think there is a lot that music and computers have in common. And that is in reality they are both a type of language. You have to learn the language in order to communicate effectively.
i agree though about the rabbit holes you can find while trying to execute one function. I went down several .
But I did finally get the job done later yesterday, thanks mostly to the plug in.
Thanks for the conversation.

I agree with you Barbara and thank you for the opportunity to discuss this.
The broad mathematical ideas and application of process are very similar.

Barb, I couldn't read music to save my life! I couldn't even tell you with the page was the right way up. The one thing I do know is that this community is awesome. If you attach a screenshot to the bottom of this post will be able to see what's going on. Someone, not necessarily me will be able to help you see this through.

Look at all these challenges as road bumps they slow you down and your ultimate goal which is to make money online. There will be lots more in the future as well but I am sure you will overcome them.

We all have bad days and we all have things we find difficult no matter how many times we've done things! Don't think you are alone

Thanks, Catherine .I just needed to let off some steam.
It seems that the lessons are outdated and the one piece of information you need is left out.
It's like following a recipe for making a cake. It won't come out right because one ingredient is left out of the directions.
I've got a couple of things to check out before I throw in the towel.

Well, what a good nights sleep and a little rant can do. I'm not sure I know what I did, but I was able to get the right information in and analytics is done and SiteKit says its all good.

Great info, thanks for posting. So, I understand that go thru WP to get this done. I'm not computer savvy either, so I feel you there Barbara. I took notes and may get back to you about this.
I'm proud for facing the demon lol.
Best of luck to you.
Lisa

Don't follow my directions Lisa, I have not gotten everything finished yet. I used the GetSite plug-in- and it connected everything except analytics. And I'm going thru again to see what I left out.

Hello Barb,

Please to meet you.
I'm Elizabeth.

I completely understood
your message here and
totally agreed with you.

I also am glad that you
let it out of your system
and that's done.

My respect for you is
such that I seconded all
that you have explained
in here.

I applaud you for that.

Be well and God bless you.

Elizabeth

Thanks, Elizabeth,
I know there are others that get as frustrated as do. Just had to let it out.

You are most welcome, Barb
and thank you much more.

Blessings.

Elizabeth

We each have a different skill set. That does not mean because there is something you can't do, you're stupid. I can't read music! The good thing about WA is that there are enough people here (especially those young ones) that computers are second nature. Just ask for help.

Sometimes when I have an issue, it helps to walk away for a minute (before I throw the computer) and come back refreshed. Deep breath. It will work out.

~Debbi

Thanks, Debbi.
I never ask questions, until I've exhausted everything else. If I can't get it together today I'lll send out an S.O.S.

I get it. I'm the same way
