DMOZ and other directories
Once upon a time, DMOZ listings were pure platinum. Today, it seems rather the opposite.
In days gone by, you could not only get a very valuable back link from DMOZ, but a good deal of direct traffic as well. However, it seems that people no longer visit directories. What's more, back links just don't have the same weight with search engines as they once did.
So, DMOZ and similar services may well be a royal waste of time. Content, social media, and autoresponders are where time may best be spent for the sake of generating traffic.

Very true. There just wasn't much quality control capability so Google slowly devalued those links and other search engines followed suit.
