Work,rest & play?

OK... I admit I have been around the block regarding work, as in working for someone for wages, either £/$ per hour/piece work/commission etc, etc

In Kyle's blog "Vegas 2015, The Best Year Yet!" he wrote

"Fatigue sets in for the "others" at some point..."

This caught my attention because I have dealt with fatigue over the years & thought I would share my strategies on how to over come it, most of the time

Fatigue hit you in numerous ways

  • Mind block
  • Tiredness
  • Physical pain
  • Head ache/migraine
  • Cramps
  • Insomnia

Those are just my quick list - but the list could easily be expanded to cover a load of things

Knowing how to cope with fatigue is being able to know when you are becoming fatigue'd. Sounds crazy - but so very true. Example - you would cope better if you knew you were about to have a heart attack, rather than just have one....simple :)

Fatigue is basically a fancy word for sensory or physical over load on your mind/body. Physical fatigue is straight forward.Just eat and rest... or is it just that? No its not as your mind can drain your body of the energy it needs making you physically tried just like concentrating on doing stuff on WA.

So I cope by breaking all the things I have to do in to bite sized parts. Some educated smart person gave me this comparison. If you were given a large bar of chocolate how would you find it easier to eat. Having the whole thing stuffed in your mouth or by breaking of small pieces at a time? Obviously you would want to break it down!!

Its fairly obvious...BUT we don't do the same with our work load/home chores etc etc

So rule one - Break everything down to the smallest practical size & don't generalize

If you don't break it down then there is no such thing as infinite time...and time has a habit of catching you up and biting you on the ass. When time bites your ass you start to get tired, one of the 1st signs of fatigue.

Are you a plate spinner? I am a plate spinner!! Sometimes I am really really good & some times I lose the odd one or two. You must have seen plate spinners. They get a long thin pole and stand it upright and spin a plate on the top of the pole. They start with one then add another & another etc etc...but they got to keep shaking the poles to keep the plates spinning. Eventually these guys can have 20-30 poles with plates spinning at the top and they got to run up and down shaking the poles to keep the plates spinning. They get to one end shaking the pole and really get that plate spinning - then they look down the line to see the plate at the far end nearly about to drop off the pole!! Potential disaster...but they run down the far end and just spin the pole in time or not, with the sweat dripping off them...exciting stuff!!

The secret to spinning plates is to go up and down the line shaking the poles as you go past each of them. That way you can have a massive line of spinning plates - BUT if you focus to much on one individual plate then your out of sequence!! The massive line of plates you have lined up will start to slowdown at different rates & that's when problems kick in and plates smash to the floor!!

So rule number two - Don't spin to many plates at once!

Multi-tasking is fine as long as you know your limits. I prefer to have a line of 10 plates spinning that i can control with ease rather than struggle badly to spin 30 plates!! Some times less is more :)

I play Rugby Union but also enjoy watching American football. Rugby is a game of physical attrition by two teams & played over two periods of 45 minutes and takes 1.5-2 hours to complete. American football is a game of attrition by two teams but played over four quarters and takes like 3-4 hours to complete.

Rugby Union is more of a players game .Its you as an individual, within a team, taking on other individuals on the opposite team. Its what YOU bring that makes the difference. The game is made up of individuals that have the skill or physical domination to win the game. Players stay on for the whole game and come off totally exhausted. Its entertaining as players have different skill sets that can influence the outcome greatly & when two teams play this allows either team to win or lose. Its open play using the whole of the pitch that is available & individual players actions will change the game every minute. Each team will have a good knowledge of the opposition and will start off with a tactical plan, but this can change through out the game dependent on how the opposition play.

American Football is different. There are specialist teams within each team. Every player has a set role within their sub team. Plays are worked out in advance, like a script and they pull each script to meet an individual threat/opportunity. Its not open play. It consists of one "play" and each team pulls out a script for its attack team or defense team to use and every player on each side knows what he is going to try and achieve within this "Play". There are set "goals" to be achieved. Gain 10 yard to retain the attack play for the attackers, prevent the attackers gaining 10 yards for the defenders. After each play each team reviews what it has or has not achieved and another script is pulled for the next play.

Rugby Union is built around individual skill & flair within the team. Hard graft and a lot of effort. American Football is built around tactics & individuals meeting the teams expectations, planning and organizing regimes.

As an individual you will put in a lot of hard exhausting graft within a short burst of time to get your goals if you play the Rugby Union way. The result you get can be varied dependent on you own skill as well as physical determination

Best to follow the American Football way. Plan everything. Have set plays. Know your tactics and when to use them as they have been prepared before hand. Concentrate on the immediate play - but have an eye on the "long game". You will have time to physically recover between each "play" as you review it and work out the next "script" to put in place to achieve your next goal. Also use "specialist" teams to get things achieved, such as the members of WA who can jump in to help you achieve your game plan.

So rule number three - Play the American Football way!

Plan out a route to take. Set small goals. Review what you achieved after each "play". Adjust to win the next goal. Use specialists to achieve what you need to. Take time to get good sound "scripts" in place once you do something, so you can pull it out in the future & save you time later.

People can really annoy me at times for no real reason. When i was younger I would sure let them know and that got me in to some scrapes ...lol

Now I have a different mind set. I ignore them. Why? Mainly because I know they don't realize they are doing it or if they do they are trying to off load their baggage on to me...and i got enough of my own to carry never mind other peoples. Same with work. Why carry baggage you don't need? If some thing is annoying me why should I add extra baggage trying to do something that I know I can do but just cant get it right. ignore it. Walk away...do something else totally different - go spin some other plates...lol

When you come back 90% of the time the thing you were trying to achieve will just work out & you will think what a dim ass your where. The other 10% of the time you still cant achieve it then play the American Football way - bring on the specialists...from WA to help you out :)

So rule number four - Take a hike!!

Some times you just get stuck in a loop because you forgot some stupid bit of the puzzle. Don't spend hours trying to beat your self up in to a ball of frustrated agitation....Ignore it and take a hike!

Gosh...long blog...off to take a hike!

Hope this helps some people to keep on track and remember less is often more
