You can optimize your site with plugins, like for images, databases, cache,...

I hear if one has a site that sells physical product, plus word press based blog, Google will only rank the site by one or the other. Please clarify
You can't really put much weight on what anyone says online about Google's indexing, unless they work at Google. All you can really do is just provide quality content and relevant keywords to the products you are promoting and then Google will take care of the rest.
Have you submitted your blog on Google webmaster and Bing Webmaster. Doing this will greatly give you plenty of feedback as far as how Google is indexing your content.
