I used this training lessons from Bommergp08 How to Make Your Content More Visually Appealing Should explain exactly how to change background color, edit the font, and other neat visual tricks.
I intend to insert a slideshow and a news bar on my front page but i do not know if its possible?

You need to download this word press plugin called Portfolio slide show.
Just type it in the search in new plugins tab.
Wanted to give a heads up, You may be using a theme containing the slide feature. Before downloading above plugin, check to see if your theme contains this integrated function.
