Teach our children

As a parent it gives me great satisfaction to observe my child use common sense that seems to expand beyond what I thought would be difficult to teach. We went shopping the other day, and while waiting in line we noticed several small items on sale. We've all seen them -- chap stick, gum, candy, magazines, batteries, etc... My daughter pointed to a pack of batteries with an eye catching tag that read 15 Extra batteries with the purchase of 15! Price tag on package read $18.00. My daughter quickly remarked "Why don't they just advertise 30 batteries for $18.00 - won't it still be a sale"?

I have no intention of trying to explain the rationale of the advertising business, but rather relish in the fact she saw the same as I did. 30 batteries would be $0.60/each, and 15 would be $1.20/each. Not only did she do the math without whipping out the smart phone, which is not hard for a 14 year old, she remarked "How dumb". Even though this scenario might be small an inconsequential to most, I take solace my child is viewing money more sensibly than I expected.

Hello Autoincome, Smart kids are great! I have a 14 year old daughter that picks up on things like this too. It's good to know she can't be easily manipulated by the advertising industry. That probably means she can't be manipulated by a bunch of other things too..

Cloux,

Are we lucky, or is our diligence paying off? I think you are right -- she's managed to staff away from being manipulated by other petty teenage "issues"
