If you're a new member here at Wealthy Affiliate and you've just launched your first website, you’re probably wondering what to do next to start growing your audience and earning income.

One of the most powerful tools in your online marketing journey is email marketing. It may sound advanced, but it's, actually a beginner-friendly and long-term strategy that helps you connect directly with your visitors, build trust, and turn them into loyal followers—or even customers.

I am dividing this post into two parts :

· Why email marketing is so important for your online success

· And exactly how you can start building your own email list, step by step

Email marketing might seem like an old tool in a world full of social media, videos, and reels. But guess what? It’s still one of the most powerful ways to grow your online business.

If you're building a blog, running an affiliate site, or selling your own products, here’s why you should never ignore email marketing.

Why email marketing is so important

1. Direct and Personal Communication

When someone joins your email list, they are giving you the permission to talk to them directly.

Unlike social media posts that disappear in the feed, emails land right in your subscriber’s inbox. It feels more personal, and that builds trust.

People check their email daily — it's still one of the most used online platforms.

2. You Own Your Audience

If Facebook or Instagram shut down your page tomorrow, you lose your followers.

But your email list? That’s yours. You’re not dependent on any algorithm. You can reach your audience anytime, on your own terms.

Building an email list means you're building a long-term business asset.

3. Builds Trust and Long-Term Relationships

When you consistently send helpful tips, updates, or insights, your audience starts trusting you.

They see you as a real person, not just someone trying to sell something.

And guess what? People buy from those they trust.

4. High Return on Investment (ROI)

According to studies, email marketing gives a $36–$42 return for every $1 spent. That’s higher than most other marketing methods!

With a small budget and the right strategy, you can generate real income just by sending emails.

This is especially great for affiliate marketers and small business owners.

5. Great for Affiliate Marketing

You can use email marketing to:

  • Recommend affiliate products
  • Send follow-ups to boost conversions
  • Share exclusive offers or content

It allows you to guide your subscribers step by step, which leads to more trust and more clicks.

6. Automation Saves You Time

Email tools let you automate your messages. You can set up a welcome series, promote products, and follow up — all while you sleep!

Once it’s set, your email system works 24/7.

This is a huge advantage for anyone running a business solo.

7. Drives Traffic to Your Website or Blog

Every time you send an email with a link to your blog or sales page, you’re getting traffic — without relying on Google or social media.

Over time, this builds a loyal audience who regularly visits your content.

Final Thoughts

Email marketing is not dead. In fact, it's one of the most reliable and profitable tools for building a long-term business online.

Whether you're blogging, doing affiliate marketing, or launching a product, email lets you:

  • Reach your audience directly
  • Build relationships
  • Earn consistent income

Start building your email list today. It’s one of the best decisions you’ll make for your online journey.

How you can start building your own email list

1. Create a Lead Magnet (Free Gift)

People don’t usually give their email just like that—you need to offer something valuable in return.

Popular lead magnet ideas:

· Free ebook or checklist

· Mini-course or video training

· Useful template or planner

· Discount or free trial (if you're selling something)

Example: “Get my FREE checklist – 10 Steps to Start Affiliate Marketing Today!”

2. Use an Email Marketing Tool

You need an email marketing service to manage your list, send emails, and create forms.

Beginner-friendly tools:

· Mailchimp (Free for up to 500 contacts)

· ConvertKit (Free plan available)

· Systeme.io (100% free plan with automation)

· GetResponse (Great for landing pages, free and paid both available ), I personally recommend.

3. Create an Opt-In Form or Landing Page

This is where people enter their name and email. Your email tool will help you build this.

There are 2 options:

· Inline Form: Place on your website or blog post.

· Landing Page: A separate page just to collect emails.

Example: “Enter your email to download your free guide.”

4. Place Signup Forms on Your Website

Add your opt-in form where people will see it:

· At the top of blog posts

· In a sidebar

· As a popup or exit-intent

· At the end of articles

5. Promote Your Lead Magnet

To grow your email list fast, promote your lead magnet everywhere:

· Blog posts

· Social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)

· Pinterest

· Guest posts

· Digital ads (if you have a budget)

6. Deliver the Lead Magnet Automatically

Set up an automated welcome email that delivers your freebie right after someone signs up. Most tools like Mailchimp or ConvertKit make this very easy.

Important: Stay Legal

Always follow email marketing rules:

· Use a double opt-in if possible (they confirm their email).

· Include an “Unsubscribe” link in every email.

· Never buy email lists — it hurts your trust and deliverability.

Pro Tips:

· Keep your form short (name + email is enough)

· Be clear about what people will get

· Show trust elements like “We respect your privacy”

Example:

Lead Magnet: “Free Ebook – 5 Steps to Start a Profitable Niche Blog”

Form CTA: “Enter your email below to get instant access!”

Interesting post, not sure if you have used any of these. The first thing that I want to draw your attention to is having MailChimp on this list.

I am not going to bash them for their horrendous customer service. But it is, horrrrrrendous.

The first rule of thumb (#6 on your list) is that when you have a lead magnet, and someone registers to get it, the first thing that you want your system to do is send a quick and simple email saying thank you for asking for your free magnet, here it is.

The free version of The Chimp DOES NOT send that first thank you email. In fact, it won't let you set up any automations whatsoever, unless you are a paid member.

I have used GetResponse as well. It does have a learning curve, and the future payment for larger clients is more than MailerLite.

The one that I am using, MailerLite, is not on your list. It has a free option, does all of the automations, and also runs your popups and creates landing pages. I just set up a six-part email series and lead magnet offering the free tools and insights into blogging after 50.

If you want to be read, add your story to the post.

What did you go through to get your email capture set up?

I am more interested in that experience than reading what AI thinks.

Thank you. Yes I am using GetResponse only because I am comfortable with the tool.
I am not aware of MailerLite. I will definitely read this post you have suggested , and also will request to the starter members to read the post and try the tool as per your requirement.

You're right, Don.

As of June 2025, Mailchimp has discontinued Classic Automations for users on the free plan.

When I signed up for Mailchimp on the free plan about five years ago, I could have up to 2,000 subscribers and send automated email series.

After taking a three-year break, I returned to find that I could only send regular emails after reactivating my pop-up and embedded sign-up form.

I wasted a lot of time designing my forms, only to discover that automation is no longer available on the free plan! 😞

Therefore, I’m switching to MailerLite.

What are your thoughts on Ai automated services like Instantly.ai to automate cold email and other keep in touch drip campaigns?

I am thinking with the advent of Ai... old methods of automating email will leave businesses behind.

Thank you, using AI tool is a great option, I have not used it yet.
After getting the basic knowledge and experience in email maketing everybody should try AI platform. It will save your time and effort. At the same time it will be opening new options and horizons of email marketing for you. I think we should consider AI tool as per the exact requirements and budget.

Wow, Atanu, this is such a timely post for me! I can totally relate because I just reactivated my pop-up and added an embedded sign-up form to the sidebar of my website. 🎉

You’re absolutely right — email marketing often feels intimidating for beginners, but once we understand that it’s really about building genuine relationships, it starts to make so much sense. I especially resonate with the point about owning your audience. Social media algorithms change all the time, but our email list is something we truly own — that’s so empowering!

I also love how you broke it down into simple, actionable steps. It took me a while to realize how important having a good lead magnet is. Out of curiosity, what type of lead magnet has worked best for you so far? A checklist, a mini-course, or something else?

Thanks again for this valuable guide — it’s a great reminder that growing an email list should be a top priority, even early in our online journey.

Thank you, I started with mini course.

Good one.

I think this topic gets lost in the process and yet it's, in my experience, the most powerful backend community building tool there is, especially when combined with a membership website or one with a popup gate so that visitors have to provide their email. Look at how Wealthy Affiliate does it. You are constantly engaged with emails reminding you of the next step and niche based info, on top of the fact that you can engage one another on the membership platform, which really is the master game: memberships and email marketing - the rest is building traffic, enlarging your tribe so to say. I have been a member here a long time and seen every trick in the book, but engagement directly with your audience and then building on that is key! Thanks to Kyle and others who have taught me a lot!

Thank you
