The choice is yours. I prefer something keyword rich, but not an exact match keyword.
So instead of BestOnlineShoesForCheap.com, I would pick MrShoe.com
You can also invent a "Brand" name and just make up a word, but I think it's harder to develop a site like that when you are starting out.
So, i need to choose one that doesn't look too much keyword heavy yet contains some keywords and a bit unique, right?
I think you have the right idea. It's not a "need" though, it's a choice. This is just how I choose my own domains.
The name won't really affect rank, but it's better to choose something short and memorable.
I also recommend NOT using numbers and dashes (-).

There's no way they could guess how much money I make from my sites, so I say no. Traffic is hit and miss. Some are close, others are not.
