Two Finger Typing - I Will Never Make It At Wealthy Affiliate

Just like the image above I am from the old school.

In my 40 years of working I never really had the need to type and honestly it wasnt until I joined Wealthy Affiliate and realised that a big part of this business was content creation that my two typing finger skills would need to improve!

I have seen people here saying they average around 60 - 80 words per minute (Does that sound correct??) and I thought s*%t I would be lucky to type that in an hour LOL!

The great thing with being able to type at those speeds, is that as quick as you are thinking what should be written, your 10 fingers (well 8 and two thumbs) are putting them into your post.

I really do know how frustrating typing a handful of words per minute can be, and while over the past 3 and a bit months I have been here my speed has definitely gotten better I am still nowhere near the dizzying heights that you speed typers are at (God Im Jealous LOL!!).

So What Have I Done About It?

One thing I havent done about it, is use it as an excuse that Wealthy Affiliate wont work for me because of the speed that I write at.

What I have done is thought, this could be a problem for me so what I need to do is find a solution!

Remember my good friends, especially the new members here like myself. With every problem in life there is ALWAYS a solution.

Excuses are easy, solutions are satisfying. I just made that up and I like it!!

What Was My Solution?

I remember being on the Wealthy Affiliate chat one afternoon and Kyle was online, a few of us were talking about the speed of our typing I think it was, and I mentioned that this was one of the problems I was facing.

Kyle then mentioned there were several types of software that were avaiable where you simply talk into a microphone and it will automatically dictate this for you onto a word doc, or what ever format you choose.

Since that day, this has now become the method I use and it has sped my article writing up to where I now type as many words a minute as I can speak, and those that know me personally will know thats a lot of words!!

What Are You Using?

For me, I simply bought a cheap $10 USB microphone from my local electronics shop and use this with the free, already installed Microsoft dictator.

The above (Not Very Good Picture) is the microphone I am using.

While I still have to do some error fixes in spelling, puntuation and grammar it really has given me back hours of time to create more articles.

There are probably better types of software out there, and if anyone is using them I would love to get your input.

However at the moment I am just glad I changed my excuse, to a problem and solved it, all thanks to the always helpful family here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Final Words

These literally are my final words, as everything I have here are the words I spoke through my cheap as $10 microphone with almost no work done by my two little fingers who are finally getting a well deserved break.

So if your excuse to why you cant succed within Wealthy Affiliate is based on you not being able to create content fast enough, I encourage you to try this method, because for me it has been an absolute game changer.

Wishing everyone all the success they deserve.

Mark

60-80wpm? Man, I’m top speed was 45-50wpm. Now I’m down to above 15-20wpm. So your two finger method was not that bad.

It is good that you tackled the problem and found a solution that works for you. I’ll be trying that here. However, spelling and punctuations were my drawback to using dictation software.

Thanks,

Canty

45 - 50 WPM is pretty impressive Canty!

If you do try it let me know what you think.

All the best,

Mark

I tried it; however, I’m so anal that I get in my own way. I found myself making corrections after every three words. 😂🤣

But I can use it and with a little practice, I may become proficient.

Canty

I keep thinking of trying the dictation software, but I seem to hate change, haha.
I have gotten so used to the hunt-and-peck method, and have gotten much better at it, over the years.
Plus I have an excuse of my own, which is that I don't think that fast anyway, lol.
Glad to hear that you have cut your writing time way down, tho. I think I will try it. If it's not for me, it's not for me; at least I'll know!

Blessings, Mark.

Hey Craig,

LOL!!! I can so relate to the hunt and peck method, and love that analogy! It Cracked me up when I first read that!

And true mate give it a try, as the old saying goes nothing ventured, nothing gained and as you said if its not for you, then its not for you.

Let me know either way what you think.

All the best from one hunt and picker to another.

Mark

Haha, I'll let you know how it goes, brother.

You had a problem and you solved it. There's always a way. That's we are taught in the lessons - to write content and solve and answer what people are struggling with, to create trust etc.
Good to see you are happy to find the solution to typing with 2 fingers. Great job.

Thanks Helen, my two fingers are very grateful LOL!

Good morning Mark,

Thank you for your blog post, I believe that many people can relate to your struggle, I certainly could a few years ago!

I haven't actually tried Microsoft dictator as I have used Dragon NaturallySpeaking for many years now. Dragon is paid software, I just looked up the price, it's about £440 now, more than I thought! There is a cheaper version available with slightly less functionality.

I certainly didn't pay that much when I first started using Dragon probably around 15 years ago. There have been many different versions since Dragon first started, each version has become better.

Although there is an initial cost, I definitely would not be without Dragon NaturallySpeaking as my typing speed is probably very similar to yours Mark! Dragon has literally saved me hours and hours of time, it's not perfect, but it's much quicker than typing and also much more accurate than it used to be.

In my experience, the most important aspect for Dragon to work is a reasonably powerful PC and a semi-decent microphone. I think this is one of the problems I probably had in the early days, my PC was not really powerful enough.

Dragon works fine on my eight-year-old Dell Latitude laptop with an i5 processor and 16 GB of RAM. Although I have a much more powerful desktop, I would say the Dragon works just as well on the old laptop. The main thing is that you have enough power to make Dragon work efficiently and effectively.

I have been told that you can receive up to 99% accuracy with Dragon, I don't, but it's not far off that amount of accuracy.

Depending on how you get on with Microsoft dictator, I would definitely say that Dragon is worth a look, despite the cost.

Have a great day.

Roy

Hi Roy,

Thank you so much for the detailed comment.

A few people have mentioned the Dragon Dictator and it will definitely be something I will look at once I start bringing in a few more commissions with my website.

I really appreciate the advice given thanks mate!

Have a great week ahead Roy.

Mark

Good morning Mark,

Thank you for your comment, it's appreciated.

I must admit I would be lost without Dragon, it saves me so much time. One of the reasons I have stuck with Dragon NaturallySpeaking is that I have learnt the basic commands. Plus I believe that it's the best speech software available.

I am told that you can potentially use Dragon NaturallySpeaking without even touching the mouse! However, I literally use it just to type, which works well for me.

Have a great day.

Roy

I like your attitude, Mark. And the saying you made up, "Excuses are easy, solutions are satisfying."

Good for you for finding a solution and good for Kyle for suggesting something that would help.

I'm not a super fast typer but fast enough I guess, for now. But I might look into it.

My husband dictates his texts into his phone. Does that count? I've not tried that either, though.

I'm sure your sharing what you do is going to help some other people here at WA :)

Lynn

Thanks Lynn and hopefully some people here get some useful ideas from this post.
