How much is too much?

Hi to all

For all of you struggling to write content and the length of articles take heed from those who study for a PhD. I am talking about the UK process, elsewhere in the world the process will be different.

Normally in the UK the PhD process takes 3 years of intensive research on something that furthers a certain aspect in your field of study. It could be small but it could be large and have pronounced affect on everybody lives. Most PhDs do not finish on time, due to the many things that go wrong and was not planned for.

In the last six months in what is know as the written stage, where you thesis is complied. The intense stage involves putting together what you have learnt into a concise form.

What most people do not release is that most universities have a strict limit of the number of words that can be written, or the maximum number of pages that can be used. If you think about when is entailed in a thesis, with many figures, tables, photographs, references, and appendices. You would think that this would be a lot and this was true in the past, where some thesis went into two volumes.

If I told you that the word limit for a modern thesis is 100,000 or 300 pages, which ever is the shortest. I bet some of you have surpassed this mark and now you can see that you can write more than what is required in a thesis. Writing a thesis to pass the highest qualification in the land, and some people here are writing more, makes each of your written achievement more special.

You can say that you are writing more than PhD students. The only difference is that you do not need to pass your viva Voce examination.

Take courage and continue writing.

Kind regards

Antonio

well said!
thank you

Never thought of that, I guess I am about one quarter of the way to a thesis, and most of that has been done in the last two months.
Thanks
Ray

Great post! and a lovely reminder about how much we are actually writing. I finished my degree in 2017 and took my Masters in 2018. I decided I couldn't take going onto PhD as didn't like the restriction and criticism of academic scrutiny. So here I am writing a blog, and keeping my researching and writing going. I love it, less restrictions, more freedom, and yes a 2000 word blog is a doddle after a thesis : )
