What I learned about internal links

I recently learned how important internal links are - to help my reader and to gain google rankings both. I keep evolving on my blog, step by step. This is the latest new improvement.

NO Internal Links

I had over 25 posts, with no links among them. I learned about internal links. So I went back into each one and put links to other posts on my own website. That makes them internal.

External is when you link to Amazon, or to Wealthy Affiliates from your blog.

Just like with an external link, I put in to open in a new page by using the settings gear to open up the options.

Link Settings Have the Options

One thing that is really cool, is that in the settings, you get all the posts listed on your site, so you can choose which one to link the chosen words of your post to. It is really easy to do!

By going back and doing this internal linking, I accomplished three things:

  1. my readers can get information they want and get involved in my blog.
  2. Google likes updated activity, and I sure gave it that! That should help me get ranking improvement.

and

3. Google likes the internal links themselves, and that will help my rankings.

A word of caution -

make sure the link is to relevant information! You don't want to mess up on accomplishment #1, the reason to have a blog at all!

Very good advice for when I get my site actually filled out and running. stawhu

Awesome post! Yes, internal linking is really cool. I use to go to blogs before, I started WA and wondered why I kept getting redirected all over the place.

Then, I realized that they were internal linking me to relevant information. Although, at the time I did not know it had a name to it. I really believe this is a great way to keep readers on your site. You can also every now and then internal link them in the comments. Now, I need to go back and check all my recent post and internal link them. Thanks for this informative post.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for sharing an important areas. I woke up to the importance of internal links just recently.

This is something I overlooked early on as well. Once I understood the value of it, I became much more diligent about including internal links where appropriate.

Great post.

Great info.

Just want to add that links to Amazon or WA are affiliate links and not so much considered external links. External links are to other authority sites like for example Wikipedia, a news site, another authority blog etc. These external links can also help your rankings - affiliate links will not help you rankings but of course necessary to have to earn:-)

All the best
Mikael

I am going to have to keep going over my posts and checking things like this. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the advice, Anne! I'm working on links too.
Mike, I will keep in mind what you're saying as well. :) Thank you...
Have a great WA Monday!

Very good and timely advice.

David

Great advice! Thank you for this

Always have to keep your internal message and the impression on Google separate in your mind!
