Random Thoughts On School

This blog will be a random unorganized thought process of mind pondering about school. Here goes!

Why didn't I get taught much in school, at least about real life necessities such as how to open, start, run, and balance a bank account? Or what about how to buy a home, stay out of debt, or how to get your credit score up? "Econ" or Economics was a joke along with "Government" since that class lacked to teach us how to vote or how to read a clause that's full of double and triple negatives, and also run-on sentences that get you confused.

Why did our class have a foreign exchange student, yet no one in our class was exchanged and offered to study from another country? I actually don't know one person that was an American foreign exchanged to another country. I wonder why we barely learned about other countries at all?

Why do they put Alaska on the map down next to Hawaii? I understand that there was "no room" but isn't it odd that many of my very intelligent friends have thought that Alaska is an island? Maybe if the map's illusion of confusion didn't effect our reasoning..??

Why were the schools so busy keeping religion out of learning? Isn't our country's money and pledge based on a "In God We Trust" country? Isn't the majority of Americans religious? Isn't science and "the Big Bang Theory" taught to us and also a THEORY, yet religion can't be gone over as a "Theory" or a way of learning other cultures and family traditions in order to better understand one another? For example, the christians believed…. but the Catholics believed …. or the Mormons, Buddhists, Scientologists believed… because I know I sure want to know what Atheist believe.. if they even do. Isn't it part of life wether you believe it or not?

Why wasn't everyone allowed to play sports or instruments? Was there really not enough funding? Was "grades" really an accurate measuremnt of your learning and knowledge? What about the sexist, racist, jealous, hater teachers that didn't grade fairly? What about the teachers that docked you for attendance or missing homework assignments from when you were absent? Should you really have to be punished with a faulty grade due to something you couldn't help such as being sick or being an active family vacationist? What about that teacher teaching the subject? Maybe they just sucked at their job!

Why did they do away with cursive handwriting? Was it not "uniform" enough? Why do I remember the constant rules of not speaking, raising your hand, standing in a straight line, no bathroom breaks, no creative learning, and no running, no climbing, and short recesses that could be taken away and was your only chance for bathroom and water relief whether or not you needed that time to get out your energy from all the sitting in your assigned seat with no wandering or stretching, and no pillow under your ass!!

Are the schools ran by Nazi Unified School Districts? I think so! Is Pluto a planet again? Are we still out of school on Columbus Day even though he didn't really do all the things they once thought that he did?

My son was in public school until I had had enough! My four year old, a Pre-K… (I guess they call it T-Kindergardern now), was punished for not completing his in class assignment before recess. So they would punish him by taking away his recess? Wow!! Are these people stupid? Or just plain cold? Obviously the kid needs to get his energy out, and obviously he is 4 and new to school life and supposed to be "Transitioning" him for Kindergarden. Torture, they take my kids only bathroom and water quenching time away for not cooperating with their bullshit assignment.

Then, I go to parent teacher conference where the teacher goes over the "grades" with me. They were not grades, just yes, no, most of the time, some of the time, and not yet covered the topic or subject. This teacher wants to tell me he only knows 6 of the 26 letters of the alphabets, I called bullshit. He knows 20 of the 26 don't you mean? No, she argues with me, Luckily I had my son outside the room, and we called him in to test his letters. He actually knew 20 and missed 6 just as I had predicted in his learning.

She looks at me and says well he only knew 6 when I tested him last week. Did she change his "grade"? Nope! She even told me that she "red flagged him" for learning disabilities. WOW!

Kindergarden was the final straw. Now I signed up with Visions Leaning Center, which is a homeschool type of learning where the academics are more like guidelines and we meet with a teacher 2 or 3 times a month to go over his packets that we complete. We spent so much time doing his homework packets from public school, it actually was the same amount of time we were spending in teaching him his academics.

The best part is, we are issued $1800.00 each semester for his schooling. About $900 is spent on the books and learning packets, and the other $900 is for us to take him to museums and personally picked "field trips" to help him learn. Oh and they give us these vouchers that pay for karate classes we enrolled him in that takes the place of P.E (Physical Education). Wow, what a plan!! Oh and my kid couldn't be happier.

I agree with you about schooling...I thought my teachers were boring except for a couple of them where I excelled. Unfortunately America is not known for education. Finland has the best education where big business has no influence and government doesn't get a look in and thee first 7 years they have fun and Finland has the most education end people in the world...I wish I was schooled there. The reason they keep you in the dark about budgeting and setting up business is they need factory workers. I enjoyed your rant and appreciate your dilemma Angel!

lol wow that is a lot of heat. i agree with you and to a certain extend you could have a pessimistic view that schools are basically bought out by corrupt agendas...i think it's more about lackadaisical policies and perhaps corporate greed that limits society. i hated public school and got into one of the best universities on the country only to drop out and pursue my own path in life so...i'm 25 whenever i have kids i'll have to think about all of this. maybe private schools that i can agree with

I would imagine that's the ideal solution for both of you - sounds like a perfect situation :)
