Is Namecheap really cheap

I was on the lookout for a new domain.

My domain registrar of choice has always been Namecheap, because as their name suggests you will most likely find them to be cheaper than elsewere.

As I was typing up names on the search, Namecheap went 'all funny' on me.

What I think is that they may have changed an algorithm in keeping with recent trends of 'suggesting' to help the customer.

But I think this is counter productive and goes against what the customer wants.

What happens is that after initial one or two names you type up into the domain search it will find the regular '.com' as always has been the case (that is if the domain is available in the first place). Anymore searches after this results in silly domain suggestions you wouldnt care about.

The main domain extensions apart from the main '.com' have been

  • org
  • co
  • net
  • country specific such as 'us, uk, eu, de, fr, in etc.

But what namecheap will then do is offer you domain extensions such as '.marketing' say if you typed in 'affiliate' in the domain search.

Finance becomes '.accounting'. I even got the word 'party' and a '.social' was show up as offer as I decided to test this out.

I tried to get the original domain that was available on my first search. But namecheap wasn't showing this anymore.

Indeed their domain search now has a 'beast mode' which I think is similar to Jaaxy in some ways but I didn't look too much into this as my main focus to simply look for a good domain.

I tried to go for a domain with a specific keyword in and sure enough Namecheap kept on showing a .marketing extension, or another depending on the keyword I had used.

Seems they didn't want to show .com names anymore when you know they were available.

Is namecheap really cheap?

The .marketing domain was around £34.89, while there was another domain extension around the £50 I kid you not!

Sure sometimes these domains do cost more, and as such namecheap have these domains up that cost more for a long time.

But to keep suggesting domain extensions no one wants to bother about and cost quite a bit extra can put customer off. Especially considering when you know certain domains are available at .dom but namecheap is not showing them.

When some companies are offering discounts or free trials at a time when there is this pendemic going on, last thing you need is companies jacking the price up similar to your local grocery stores.

Thankfully, there was a way around this and that is to simply close the tab or window for namecheap and go back onto the site.

It just reset back to beggining so I was able to get the original domain (in a .com of course).

My persistance paid off as I also got a promo code which is around half price of the original price of upwards $8.

You can see the promo code in the above picture, but if you wanted to know what site offered the code then I got it form here https://couponcode2019.com/ .

I'm not sure if namecheap will keep the new feature like this or if other registrars have already done this before.

Like I mentioned before if this ever happens, close the window and look for the .com tthat was initially available.

Do you use namecheap? How long has feature been going?

Let me know what you guys think.
