Simple improvements to your websites

Hello friends and fellow affiliates!

I enjoy checking out and offering feedback on your websites. However, since I find myself saying the same things over and over, I figured I'd share some highlights in a post for everyone. Here are the main things I notice when I arrive on a new website:

THINGS to ADD or UPDATE:

  • brief intro (2-3 sentence max) to you / your site / your philosophy in the widget / sidebar area
  • update any “UNCATEGORIZED” posts to have a meaningful category
  • have balance of text, color, and/or photos for reader visual interest
  • MAIN MENU should only take up one row (re-organize if necessary)
  • make sure the site URL and SITE TITLE are consistent
  • navigation by your post's CATEGORIES (menus, drop down widgets)
  • navigation by your post's TAGS (menus, drop down widgets, tag clouds, etc)

THINGS to REMOVE:

  • RECENT COMMENTS (readers aren't likely to care about this)
  • ARCHIVES are generally not helpful and can be a double edged sword (this section is only useful if the date of your posts are relevant -- otherwise it can highlight that a site is new / not a longstanding authority, OR can highlight that no posts have been made recently / that site is old and outdate)
  • META (this section is only for admin users of your site, and offers no value to your readers)

I hope these TIPS help to improve your site and your reader's experience! What things do you notice as a first impression when you land on a new site?

Warm Regards, Alyce
