Glad to be back home after 4 - 5 days away in a foreign country! My last post was about 6 days again where I posted that I will be travelling to Ho Chi Minh city for a leadership training called Emerging Leaders. I'm here to share with you some of the things that I have learnt from this eventful trip - about leadership, value, purpose and more!

On the first day, I met a lot of other very inspiring leaders from various organisations - some were CEOs, Directors, HR personnel, engineers etc and most of them, if not all, were completely humble individuals who have all put away their fancy titles, background etc to come together and learn. One of the coach explained why the training was held in a different country although we were all from the same country - the main reason was to take all of us out of our comfort zone which further enhanced our sense of teamwork and 'force' all of us to learn better. He further mentioned that by doing so, it often amazes him that when we're out of the country, we Malaysians tend to 'come together' and be more united. Do you think its true? I certainly think so...

There were discussions, sharing of experriences on leadership, values and purpose. Do you think values or purpose comes first? I think your core values comes first as this is what is ingrained in you throughout your life and with your strong value, comes the purpose in life. There are core values which you do not compromise no matter what and these are the values that will trigger you to take action especially when something/someone did or say something that goes against your values. So, what happens when you have different values than your team members? How do you work around that? Do you try to change their values and believe or do you encourage them? There are no positive or negative values as values themselves are neutral.

We watched a movie - Remember the Titans - and discussed on the values that were displayed in it. It was a great movie, one that I've read countless time on great leadership movie.

On the 3rd day, we had the opportunity to see Ho Chi Minh city while completing the teambuilding activities where we're required to complete tasks at each checkpoint (similar to Amazing Race). There were activities that required us to get strangers to be part of the photos - teaching us to think out of the box, communication and influencing people since we need to convince strangers to take part in our photos (we managed to convince a few guards at the Reunification Palace to be part of our photo!). The main purpose of the activity was on setting and achieve goals, increasing teamwork with feedback on the team leaders etc.

Leadership is the art of harnessing human energy towards creation of better future.

Leaders are supported by others around them - co-leaders. Just like how Kyle and Carson is to WA community. It is the support, guidance and everyone working together to create a better future for everyone.

The last day was an eventful moment as my flight was cancelled due to technical issue (we found out there were issues with the plane's tyre!), being moved to a hotel to spend the night and get ready for a morning flight. When morning comes, on our way to the airport, the bus that was transporting all the delayed passenger met with an accident about few 100 metres from the airport. Finally, queuing up at the check-in counters, we encountered our final problem of the morning - the check-in system was down! Talk about an eventful week!

Neverthelss, I'm glad I made it for the training and back home safely now to continue with my work here.

Regards,

Alston

Hi Alston that would of been such an enriching experience. I think that our values help to create experiences, and it is those experiences that help create purpose.

Helping the folks around us can be a win win, for all.

Hi Alex, yes, it was definitely a very enriching experience!
