Google Search and Interstitials
What are Interstitials and why should we care? Interstitials are the annoying pop-ups that cover a page content with some type of advertising. Google has announced that on January 10, 2017 a new update to their algorithm will effect sites that use pop-ups.
Google wants to improve the user experience (UX). 80 percent of internet users own a smartphone and use it to search the internet. Having pop-up advertising occur as soon as a user opens a page is now being considered bad form by Google. There are a few items that Google will allow such as age verification and allow cookies.
Banner ads that use green space at the top of a page appear to be OK with Google. As long as they do not take up the whole page.
You can read more about this on a very good blog post by Neil Patel.
