What's in a Name? More than you think.

Hello WA Fam!

Today I wanted to ask the community a question: What does your name mean?

The very first impression we get of someone (online at least) is their name. We subconsciuosly form judgements about people that way. Intentional or not, what's in a name?

My (screen) name is AHost-Madsen. I chose this name for a few different reasons.

First of all, Amy is a common name. Although I did not use Amy in my screen name, I did make my avatar reflect my name.

Second of all, I'm recently married (8/10/18). I'm kinda attached to my (new) name. Interestingly enough, Host is not my maiden name. My husband is of European decent and his nationality derives their last names from the father (son of). It would be akward to say Madsenson, so Host simply means son of (son of Madsen).

Lastly, this is (in a sense) a writing platform and should I one day become successful, that's how I want people to remember me: AHost-Madsen. If I were to just use Amy, what comes to mind? Amy Winehouse. The song Amie (Amie, what you want to do? I think I could stay with you. For a while, maybe longer if I do). Amy Adams.

What does your (screen) name mean?

I changed my name here to my real name, Dalibor (Slavic origin name which would literally translate as "fight far away") which could be interpreted as someone who avoids a fight.
Which is ironic because my previous name was Verzus (comes from versus, against, but with Z because it looks cooler lol) as I don't like to blindly obey to stereotypes but instead follow my common sense and conscience.

Letter T is the first letter of my surname.

So your name is based around your heritage...COOL!

What a neat story/idea. First I'd like to say Congrats on your marriage! My birthday is actually August 8th. My real name is Susan. My family called me Sus growing up. So I turned my email into a spell it like it sounds, sooz. added my last name initial,k and added the year I started WA 017 and ended up with a long, confusing soozk.017@gmail.com. I didn't want to use my name because I was a little nervous about doing all this internet stuff because I am not a techie.
Nice talking to you!
Susan

That was a very creative way to come up with a name without using your 'real' name!

Amy,
What an awesome idea for a post!

Sho is a nickname from way back, a 'shortened' version of Shaunna... it stuck.

Then Wolf... there's the esoteric reason behind it... and there's the uncomplicated reason as well.

Shaunna

My husband likes to call himself the LoneWolf...
I'm like, 'WHAT?!? We're married!!!' lol

🤣

Thank you Amy! I just used my first initial and last name by habit. It has been a private game all my life. My Dad's name was Mel so we both signed our names M Bartley and got a kick out of sharing.
He passed away a few years ago and I still use it the same way and that brings back fond memories.

Cheers

Murray

Thank you for sharing that! I'm sure your dad is looking down on you and smiling :)

As you can see... I used my name. For branding Me! 😛

LOL

Thanks, Amy for the story. I think Amy is a very nice name and a little unusual these days. My screen name is simply my real name. My first name is Alister and my last name is Bredee. The system would not take all the letters of my last name so I turned out as brede.

Thank you for sharing! I don't think anyone here will call you Mr. Bredee so I'll remember you as Alister (he was one of the main characters on the show 'You Can't Do That on Television' when Nickelodeon first became popular back in the 80's although I believe he spelled his name Alistair :)

Best of luck on your journey to success!

Well, dang - you all have more interesting stories than I!

My parents named me Laurie because they liked it, and it was a popular name when I was born (always someone else with that name in every classroom!).

At least I learned from that, and gave my daughters less common names.

I was anxious to get started at WA, and didn't give my username too much thought. Laurie was already taken, so, I added the "new".

There's my boring story!

Well 'New'Laurie...when I see your screen name I think of the old sitcom 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus :)

I think of Lori Partridge from "The Partridge Family"!

Ha ha ... probably way before your time!

Hi Amy

Mine is abbreviations of my 3 children

Dija
Talleh
Jacob

That's quite sentimental :) I'm sure they are a driving force on your journey to success!

Yes they are :)

Thank you very much, Amy, for your post. I have discovered personally that people who attach their activities to the meaning of their names tend to perform better than those who are not NAME-MEANING conscious. My name is Joseph and I associate it very much with the Biblical name of Joseph, the Governor of Egypt under Pharaoh. My activities, therefore are associated with hard work so that i may save my family or my nation in one way or another.
Joseph

Wonderful!

Many blessings on your journey to success!

Hi - contrary to what people might think, I am not a Scorpio. I chose my name because I am a middle-aged rock chick, and my favourite band is the Scorpions!

Love it!

Best of luck on your journey to success!
