Living with ADHD
I bet many of you heard of ADD/ADHD, but are not fully aware of what it is. I, myself have ADD which is the more mild form of ADHD.
Since 1994 many doctors decided to categorize this under ADHD, "Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. So you may be asking, "what are the symptoms for people who have ADHD?" You will find out in the next paragraph. First, lets list the three categories of ADHD:
- Inattentive type
- Hyperactive/Impulsive type
- Combined type
ADHD is a disorder that is brain-based. It will definitely interfere with your daily tasks especially at work and school. These are the three signs to look out for, for someone who had ADHD.
- Inattention- Well, I can mainly relate to this, we have a hard time paying attention and often get scolded from people. We are often disorganized, have a hard time staying on task or focusing on one subject, constant daydreaming and we can be a pain to teach. We require a lot of patience.
- Impulsivity- Under this category these individuals, well they don't mean to be rude or hurt others, They often interrupt without thinking the harm they can cause or any long term effects which can ruin a relationship. Once in a while I will behave like that especially on a subject that's very interesting. Often they act quickly especially if they know they'll be rewarded.
- Hyperactivity- This hardly happens to me, not unless I'm very bored. You know the pandemic... LOL We tend to squirm, fidget, start tapping, talking out loud, constant movement, inapproprate behavior(awkward situation or talking about a random subject that has nothing to do what others are talking about, goofy/weird behavior).
What I personally went though
Being looked down by many of my peers back in school, some neighbors and my parents at the time. It was difficult. Pretty much we are more likely to get verbally and physically abused, get picked on and be labeled as weird, freak, f$%#ing retard(such loving parents, now we get along mostly),,, any other colorful language you can throw out there.
I struggled a lot academically, and my parents expected a lot from me because they are college graduates with the highest hardest to achieve degrees. We get along now, especially after all the altercations I got with them, (typical uptight arrogant angry nerds) sometimes you just have to stand your ground, but it was crazy violent. Wasted five years in college and couldn't accomplish anything. Yes, you can say I was very frustrating to teach.
The pace was too fast for me, and I could never keep up. After wasting five years in college. I decided to go to a Trade School, I did much better there because I didn't feel overwhelmed focusing on multiple subjects and passed with a GPA 3.6. I was still the slowest one in class but still did better then some of my smart peers. I just require patience, but I do eventually understand the subject. :)
People with ADHD aren't necessary dumb, we just need a different method of teaching. I had a very nice dentist from India who was supportive of me. Motherly like. She understood the symptoms of ADHD and told me I'm not stupid. Metaphorically speaking, she said to me, "Could a fish climb a tree?" I thought of that for a while.
What I do to work with my ADHD
Back in school, I always took notes, sometimes I wrote them down on flashcards, and sometimes I'll go to a website called Kenhub and that really helped me did well academically. That website had many pictures and it explained the subjects so well and quizzed you so often ranging from very easy to very difficult.
The teacher back in Trade School was very patient with me, and the peers were a lot nicer too for the most part and not as judgemental. They all spent time with me on some subjects I had a hard time on, and I passed with A's and B's. I was still a bit sluggish on my quizzes since I couldn't comprehend right away.
When I was working as a massage therapist, my boss from Macau was very patient with me. He thought I was acutally quite smart, He showed me his massage techniques and was surprised I picked up on them quite quickly. It still took me a while to become a good therapist, but the techique and the body mehanics were quite good for the most part. I even had quite a few clients who only wanted to see me. :)
Sometimes I will make some mistakes at work, a few times I accidentally undercharged or overcharged my clients. Sometimes they were a little annoyed but understanding. I was also living in Nevada during that time, and I got along with the locals there. I lived most of my life in California..... Everything has to be organized and plan ahead, especially when it comes to appointments. Sometimes you just have to say NO. Every now and then my boss asked me if I can do a last minute appointment, but sometimes I just had to refuse.
Most of all, always take notes, jot down everything on the calendar, and time yourself. Don't let people bring you down or force you to do something you're not good at. If you have violent family members who are not understanding. Get help, Report them. And/or ask if you can stay at a friend's or family member's house for a while
.
Do not feel overwhelmed and do not stress.
Thank you. Peace. :)

Wonderful post Adam,
I read it right through
You literally state every thing possible ,to get everyone reading to understand ADHD
And you are right , some people are slow learner , but that do not mean that they won't learn
All that happens is that they learn slower than others
Keep going Adam , you are doing well , and you should be very proud of your achievement at Wealthy affiliate so far
Keep it up
Hello there, and thank you very much for reading my post. Yes, some people don't understand what ADHD is, and they assume the worst.
The best thing we can do is to educate people about ADHD, and they can't accept that and keep insisting that's it's just an excuse, well all I can say is karma will catch up to them. LOL
I am very proud of my achievements. The only problem is I lack confidence and sometimes I can be too pessimistic. I need to change that.
Thank you and have a great day.

ADD/ADHD remains difficult for many people to deal with, partly in my opinion because they simply do not understand what exactly happens in someone with ADD/ADHD, fortunately more and more is being known about this condition and increasingly clear what and how to deal with it.
Fortunately, you ended up in the right place and you can deal with it
Yes, I would like more people to have a better understanding for people who have ADHD. It’s sometimes part of human nature to assume the worst.
People with ADHD aren’t necessarily lazy or stupid. We just need a different method of learning and/or approaching our tasks at work.
As time goes by it does seem like people have because more tolerant and understanding to people who have ADHD. :)
Hopefully your day/night is going well. I wish you the best of luck.

I like to believe that there is still too much misunderstanding in the field of ADHD it is indeed exactly what you say people immediately assume the worst while that is really nonsense if you take the time to understand things and delve into them then it's all a lot less bad than you think or immediately call
Sounds like you have some education or experience with mental health. Great. Wish my parents had been. To this day they are in denial.
i have both mental health is just as possibly itself more important than physical health physical is tangible mental is a lot harder I've had my share of misery in my case caused me to delve more and more into both physical and mental health
I'm so touched by your story Adam. To be honest this is my first time to hear about ADD/ADHD. I can see that you are a persistent and resilient person. With these attributes you are going to reach your dreams. So keep going and you'll get there.
Hello there and thank you for reading my blog. I do what I can to reach my goals even if it takes me double or triple the time compared to the average Joe.
I wish you well to achieve your dreams too. Keep at it. :)

I can totally relate to this. My son has ADHD and it was very challenging raising him. It still affects him, For any parent raising a child with ADHD, It can be hard especially when you don't fully understand what it is. I learned the hard way, but I learned. Thanks for writing this post Adam
Having ADHD can be very challenging. I do understand our parents wants what’s best for us. They’ve tried and failed which drives some of them to madness.
Sometimes it can be hard for us to get along with people. Some will often look down on us thinking that we’re just plain dumb or lazy. At the same time you can’t expect everyone to like you. Lol
Personally I don’t mind the scolding “shouting” “snapping fingers” it actually helps me pay attention. Many teachers had me sit in the front but were still easier on me compared to the kids who didn’t have “ADHD.”
It can be hard for everybody. We can be a pain to deal with and we need to find our own method on how to do well in school and do well in our work environment. ADHD can be hard to comprehend because some people who are diagnosed with it have different symptoms than others. Some people can’t tell I have ADHD. Plus I’m usually very mellow and shy. Sometimes you can’t tell if a person has ADHD or not.
There are many steps to discipline ADHD. What has work for me is, I’ll take frequent short breaks every 30 minutes and do a very short burst of hard core physical activities to get my heart pumping. Practicing yoga and meditation can help discipline the mind for better focus. Pretty much any physical activities may help.
Sometimes I have a hard time comprehending and completely forget what I read. Sometimes what I do is break my reading down into sections after each paragraph and write a little note on the side or highlight. What may help is read out loud the main topics of the book.
Just some useful advise. Lol
Hopefully your day is going well. I wish you and your son the best. Sometimes we drive our mothers crazy. They deserve a big break and a vacation.

Good morning Adam, I'm familiar with ADHD, we adopted a 3 1/2 year old baby boy who was ADHD, he excelled at things that interested him, forget it if not interested. Students and teachers alike either loved him or despised him, no in between. Our grandbaby has autism and ADHD we believe. Good article Adam, hope you have a fine weekend.
