Defining Success
What is, "Success?"
(c)2023 J S Shipman, Ph. D.
We all want success, At least, I think we all do, don't you? But, what exactly is success? There are dictionary definitions of, "Success." For example, "The achievement of wealth, favor, or, eminence," is part of one definition given by Webster's (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/success Accessed 11/29/2023). "The achieving of the results wanted or hoped for," is a description of success found in the Cambridge Dictionary (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/success, Accessed 11/29/2023). The term, " success," can be applied to a person or a thing. In, "The salmon dinner you made yesterday was a hit," hit means it (the dinner) was a success. And, you are a success too, or soon will be.
To be a success, you must go beyond the dictionary definitions and define success for yourself. What makes YOU a success?
If you have mini-successes they can lead to greater and greater success. I heard that idea from Tai Lopez. He illustrated it with a dating scenario. If you start by asking a famous movie star out, you are likely to be turned down. But, if you ask a classmate, that classmate may accept your offer. You gain confidence, ask others out, meet more people, including people who know the movie star, and ultimately, you may be successful in meeting the movie star, The "mini-successes strategy," can be applied to business situations, too.
You can use digital means, for example, in spreadsheets to keep track of the steps along the way to your ultimate success. This tracking might help you realize that as you grow, your goals, or your ideas of "success" may change.
Let's start with personalizing success for you. Here, at Wealthy Affiliate, we have a good start with listing our goals. In addition, we get feedback from a variety of well-informed sources. It appears to me that most people responding to your goals are either on the same page as you, or they are where you want to be, For me, such responses have the effect of building in me greater confidence in achieving my financial goals.
There are many other areas that may indicate success to you. Reflect here and jot down your ideas What is important to your ultimate, personalized definition of success?

Once you have reflected on aspects of success, you may want to write down what you want to achieve. Write down your personal definition of success. Post your personalized definition where you can see it or put it in your pocket where you can review it frequently and redirect yourself toward your goals.

Using this writing-and-reading strategy to focus attention on my goals works for me, but, after teaching K-University for more than 20 years, I realize that different people learn and focus via different methods. I will post a few examples below.
People with ADHD told me that a tip I shared with them --- to have a private notepad on which to write down distractions from their focus and then return to their task at hand, helped them to accomplish more. Read that as, "achieve more goals." If they thought about the same distraction, more than once, they could add a check mark for each time after the first where they wrote it down. Typical distractions included thoughts on bill-paying, dinner, a date on the weekend, things they had to do at home, errands... Well. you know your distractions. As soon as they did this and completed the task they were focussing on, they could then look at their list and schedule time into their calendars to handle the distraction(s). Staying focused helps reach more goals, fostering success.
A fellow faculty member told me he had to tape what he wanted to learn, play it back, and write it on a blackboard. By doing this tape-play-write (on the blackboard... that dates him) strategy, he was able to learn and apply what he learned to complete his doctorate. That was the success he was looking for at that time.
The point of the given examples is to encourage you to learn what works best for you to learn and apply strategies to reach your goals and achieve the success you want.
Let me give you an example of my personalized definition of success.
I want to achieve success in several areas.
For spiritual success, I want to read Scriptures every day and do my best to do what the the Lord wants, especially taking care of my family and heirs, helping others, and by being an example to others through my behavior. For me, success in this realm is also to bring someone to know the Lord and contribute to the World improving.
Family success to me is good communication, shared values, fun, love, commitment, and staying in touch with each other. Friend(s) success is to gain five friends who share my values and are already where I want to be. I also want to bring something to the table, from among my skills, for them.
For growth-of-business success and being open-to-new-opportunities-and-ideas success, my goal is to keep. For financial success, I am going to start with the first step of $7000 in five months then re-evaluate before going for Grant Cardone's 10X. I will keep the vision and build it for other people of
farm/school/non-profit/J/Real estate/exit strategy.
Academic Success I want to learn something new every day and read 5 or more books a week. I want to go through the HOT Skills Wheel TM for whatever I am learning
Time-management Success Time management is very difficult after my traumatic brain injury I am going to use an Italian technique I was teaching my students 3 years ago and which I have recently seen being taught by a Harvard guru.

My students always told me that I was consistent and if I said something, "I did it." So for consistency success (Consistent behaviors, Consistent income,), I am going to focus on consistent income. I believe this consistent income will come from hard work and persistence. Persistence Success will cause the forward movement that leads to success in all the other areas. Honesty, integrity, and fairness are the values I want reflected in my success
The conclusion of this article, "Defining Success," is what you write next. Your personalized definition of success.

I feel successful if I write consistently every week. Gaining new followers also makes me beam "Success," from ear to ear.
If I get ideas about what let's me get more followers, knowing those numbers would make me plan better. Planning better and activatiing the plans truly makes me increase my success shine.
Final thought:s Be happy. Happiness should be on all our lists in my opinion. Be relaxed and reflect on the thought that today you are a success. Doesn't that make you smile?
