Sudden inflow of visitors, but a high bounce rate?

So I had a look at my analytics yesterday, and noticed that on monday, I had a HUGE spike of visitors visiting my post that day about kettlebells (this post http://fight-fuel.com/kettlebell-benefits-functional-fitness)

The most traffic I would get a day would be just over 20, if I'm lucky. Then suddenly, I got 681 visitors that day! As of right now I have 873 referrals from flipboard.com. I don't know how my stuff got there but it has.

So far all I have been using is G+, twitter, and reddit.

Does anyone know about flipboard?

Thing is it seems to have given me quite a large bounce rate now from all the traffic. Does this really matter at all? I Guess it is still good to get more people to read, the internet is a mysterious place.

This is mainly just an update really. It's quite exciting to see that many people come on to my site!

Hello VRL, if you haven't already done so,go to this site about Flipboard:https://about.flipboard.com/ It will give you a good view of the site and what you can do. Depending upon what Browser you use, you can edit online and post to Flipboard also. Mobile advertising and Mobile friendly sites are getting more attention now than ever. My compliments to you about your site also-very nice presentation etc. I really like the Genesis framework pages. To me, you have a popular site topic and your content was posted on mobile where there is a good bit of interest in your product. Keep going Sir! Respectfully-Gary Crantz

Flipboard is fantastic. It comes pre-installed on a lot of Samsung smart phones and is available in the Google Play store. When you use it for the first time you select interests that you would like to read about and from then on it continually gathers articles from around the internet on those topics, delivered directly to the app on your phone throughout the day.

It also allows users to create their own "magazines," and "flip" articles into the magazine, which other users will then follow. As HoJo said, there is a huge following there. I use it daily, and can see how it effects the bounce rate. A typical user will see a small blurb from the actual article and tap on it to read more. The entire article opens within the app, the user reads it, and then moves on to the next article as if a physical copy of a newspaper or magazine.

I see. It's my iphones fault for not having it then, haha yeah that's it

My friend, overall, this is absolutely a positive. Sometimes things will get reposted and shared within flipboard, which has a very large traffic base and is an authority site, used by hundreds of thousands of people, if not more. I have found that even more traffic is generated from Flipboard when it is shared by someone else than if you submitted on your own. Flipboard has a HUGE following and an extremely popular app to go with it.

I assume that your theme and site are responsive for mobile and page load times are ok?

This happened to me for a couple of my articles a little while ago. One of my product reviews was picked up on Flipboard and it caught some steam and resulted in a TON of sales. This was not the only reason I had a great couple of months, but it absolutely played a role.

Make sure that you are focusing a little extra effort on marketing that particular article and sharing it wherever possible.

You want to keep your bounce rates lower, but right now, I don't think you should be overly concerned with that statistic. It is common for affiliate websites to have higher bounce rates because many of us are targeting a lot of our individual posts, almost as individual websites. By this, I mean each page is targeting a specific keyword/s and especially, when a page is focused on one particular product, it is not uncommon that people will find everything they need on that page and possibly leave without navigating further into your site. This is a great thing if they are leaving your site because they are headed to your offer. Even if they spend a decent amount of time on that one particular page, they can still technically result in a "bounce."

If your traffic was fairly low per day at this point anyway, I really don't see much downside for you. Quite the opposite! Keep an eye on the bounce rates for the specific page that has been receiving the most traffic, but more importantly, keep an eye on your conversions and do what you can, if you haven't already, to make sure that all this new traffic is engaged when they are finding this page and collecting emails wherever the opportunity presents itself.

I wish you all the best and much success for you and your business!

Howie

Cool thanks Howie!

Yeah I'm using genesis framework. I think I have seen flipboard once but don't know anything about it. Seems like it's more like something someone would use on their phone/tablet.

I will be further investigating what I can do with this. Thanks for the insight on this new area for me, learning a lot from this post from everyone :D

The traffic is coming from this page https://flipboard.com/section/fencing-&-cocktails-bFNkvc
or perhaps the flipped page, never seen this site before but it looks like a social network type site.

High bounce rate isn't a great thing, but it's not always bad either.
If someone lands on your page and doesn't visit another page on your site or perform an action, or hits the back button, this is counted as a bounce.

But for some queries a visitor isn't expected to visit other pages, an example would be checking the weather forecast.
I do this daily and rarely click over to another page.

It's bounce that hit the back button to Google and click on other search results that are more of a problem, this tells Google that your web page didn't answer the query.

But either way, working at lowering the bounce rate is recommended and as Michelle already mentioned, don't worry too much about the bounce rate right now..

Thanks for clearing that up welshy. Guess it shows that stuff I'm doing is actually getting round which is a good thing, since I'm just a baby in this all really.

Previously I had a bounce rate somewhere in the 30% mark, so I'm not upset by this. I actually noticed someone accessing a page on a tablet, so they probably "flipped" it and saw it on that, then flipped back to the other articles on that page there.

Makes more sense to me now as well about bouncing and how it would be important in google searches

Thanks, I'll just keep going at it. It certainly was quite a surprise

I can't help you at all with flipboard or your bounce.
I did check out your kettlebell article and left a comment there.
Keep up the good work.
Phil

It's great that you're getting such a surge in traffic! As for your bounce rate, the lower it is the better because it is the number of visitors that are leaving your site after only viewing one page. An average bounce rate is around 50%. I think yours will come down, but I wouldn't worry about it right now.
