The WP Edit Plugin allows you to add formatting and other features that are missing from the standard WordPress Editor.
This plugin replaces the Tiny MCE Editor that many people were using before WordPress upgraded to version 3.9, so if you are using the current WordPress version, you will need to replace the Tiny MCE editor with this one.

Perhaps add a caching plugin, these usually help with site load times. Have you optimized your images? This is the other thing that seriously impacts site loading.

This is awesome! I was advised at one point that Tiny MCE Editor had caused some issues for some people and maybe it would be better to avoid it. May I ask what your advice would be to the relative beginner on the WP Edit Plugin?

Use it sparingly, its nice to have but changing font sizes and colors all over your site doesn't provide a good user experience.
You can use it to emphasize an occasional point but try hard not to overuse the formatting options.
