How to Fix a 404 Error

Link reclamation is the process of fixing broken links on and to your website. You are going to want to correct link errors that can affect your SEO score. You can find and fix 404 errors by using Google Search Console.

STEP-BY-STEP 404 ERROR FIX

I am going to show you one way to fix 404 page not found errors on your website. If you search for fixing 404 errors, you'll find a few way to correct these type of errors. I like fixing the broken link errors using the following process.

  1. Navigate to Google Search Console using the link or Googling it.
  2. Inside of Google Search Console click on the website you wish to work on.
  3. Now click on the crawl link located on the left side panel.
  4. You are now on the URL Error page, from here you will be able to select your server error, access denied errors, and pages not found errors. Go ahead, choose "not found" to start fixing broken links.
  5. Where you start will not make a difference. Clicking on a 404 error will take you to a page where you can select the "Linked from" tab.
  6. On the Linked from screen, you will find a list of pages that are linked to the trouble page. From here you can fix the broken link on your site and find the external link leading to your page.
  7. Once you found an external broken link, you can contact the site owner with the new link or create a redirect.

Ey there LeNard, would it be safe to assume that many 404's originate from viewers misspelling our URLs? I'm getting a lot of 404's and that's what many of them appear to be. I do not have any broken links. What's your opinion my Brother?

Thank ya',

Randy

Hi, Randy, It could be that the site owner typed the URL wrong. contact the owner with the right URL or create a redirect.

I'm bad at changing a page and forgetting to check what backlinks were going to the page.

I'm using Simple 301 Redirects so I am creating redirects for all of them but the 404's just keep rolling in and I'm wondering who in the world keeps typing in all the wrong URLs.

Well thank ya' again partner! Hopin' your week is awesome!
