If you need to permanently redirect one post or page on your website to a new one, here are two ways to do it! One is editing the .htaccess file, and the other is with a plugin.

In both cases, a page was redirected with the same website.
Is it applicable to two different websites, as in my case? If it is applicable in the case of two different websites, then, the full URL will be changed (not only the last part).
Suppose I am redirecting a post from Website A to Website B. After redirection where the page will be visible? Only in Website B?

I'm not clear on what you're asking.

Redirection strategies vary based on what you're trying to accomplish, but this training is just focusing on redirects within the same website.

I have two different websites.
I want to move a post from one website to another.
How to redirect?

I included the link where I wrote the question.
One of the members told me that you can help to solve the problem.

Nathaniell, do you need a 301 redirect if you put a post in trash but don't permanently delete it? I don't have a post to redirect this particular post to because it's not related to anything else on my blog. I put it in trash because it needs so much work that I'm not sure it's worth it. If I decide to restore it and completely rewrite the post, do I need to do anything else?

Am I making any sense??

Thanks a lot!

If you trash a post, you'd need to do your redirect at the domain level, in your htaccess file or with a plugin. Any redirect you put on the custom blog post would be deleted if you delete the post.

If you restore the blog post, then you can implement the redirect as you see fit, or simply update the post and you're fine!

Thanks, nathaniell...actually, I emptied the trash so I couldn't restore, anyway. Was that a dumb thing to do?

Thanks, Nathaniell, excellent training.
The hard way is too hard for me. I haven't got my mind around using Filezilla yet, so I tried the plugin. But the problem is the 301 redirect I'm trying to do doesn't work - because it's not just the end of the URL... I'm trying to use a 301 redirect to redirect http and www versions of my site to https. Apparently my site is being seen by the search engines as showing duplicate content because I haven't set this up correctly in google search console - always my nemesis.

This was so amazingly simple to do. Google gave me all sorts of complicated solutions which didn't work, to boot... -.- thanks much!!

Thanks for information, it is something that I needed right now. I opted for the better way to do this and after following you instructions on editing the .htaccess file, my site was gone. Shows internal server error? All is okay after uploading the original file so then I used the plugin. The plugin works just fine but I have 10 comments on the post and they do not show on the redirected post. Do you know if these comments can be moved?

Great information, really help me redirect people going to my old site to my new site. I just found out that some of my content was copied onto someone else's site with links to my old site. Weird that they didn't even bother to change the links when they stole my content. I have a copy blocker on my website, but looks like they may have copied the content from Street Articles Guess will have to rethink what I put on Street Articles, no blocker on there. Cheers! Paul

Good evening,

What is the best way to link my .co.uk site to my .com site please?
Both have DNS settings for WA and both are from Namecheap.

Many thanks,

Thanks Nat could this be used for me to direct a viewer to a page on my other site?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Yes - you can redirect any page to any page on any site. Just be careful if you start to get a mish mash of two sites redirecting this and that back and forth :)

OK great I am going to try it one way from my .com site to my .co.za site which will help avoid duplication, cheers I will let you know if I succeed.

Can this change be made by activating the File Folder feature in the All in One SEO plugin, which now gives us access to the .htaccess file, instead of using FTP?

Can we use the .htaccess redirct code to redirect a page to a completely different website, or is that not recommended? ~Jude

Wondered what a 301 was for Nathaniell. Thanks for the explanation. Does deleting the post and re-writing it then reposting it mess up your site if the post is already indexed in the search engines?

Thanks for the mentorship. Over my head today... but here's the real MESSAGE. It is people like you and many others here that make WA so special.

If I recall correctly, you publicly acknowledged your 5th year here at WA and recited your journey along those years....and here you are giving back to the WA community a testament as to what can be accomplished if you make a commitment to yourself to never quit no matter what.

As a new member, thank you for your unselfish contributions to this Community .

Very good. This video does not suffer from the "if you don't already know how to do this you won't understand this lesson either" problem that many technical videos suffer from.

Thanks Nathaniell - your training provided a bit of education as well as a little break from some site work I had going on.

Out of curiosity, do you use redirects to clean up Amazon Affiliate links? Just curious.

Dennis
Reply
nathaniell Premium
No, a redirect for an amazon link wouldn't make sense. Also, it's against amazon's TOS to use deceptive linking (redirecting) although as far as I know they are OK with pretty link.

Good training. Another way still - if you use Studiopress/Genesis themes, 301s are built in and you get a field on the post editor where you can fill in the new page url. I've used it and its very easy and no need for a plugin or to create an htaccess file.
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Ahhhhh. Jay has this too, but my version of studiopress does not have this. I don't know why. It's updated.
Reply
Jay Gumbs Premium
Really? Don't know why this would be. It's called "Custom Redirect URL" under the Theme SEO Settings.
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Do you have AIO SEO or Yoast installed? Maybe mine is not there because I have an SEO plugin installed (that makes the themes SEO settings disappear)
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Yup, I saw a screenshot and it's part of theme SEO settings. Now I just need to know if I can disable AIO and have Genesis remember various settings. I'll contact Studiopress to find out!
Reply
nathaniell Premium
NVM. Fixed with with SEO Data Transporter Plugin
Reply
Jay Gumbs Premium
So did it work? Do you have it now. I don't use AIO or Yoast since I use the theme's SEO settings.
Reply

Yeah, am using genesis seo now and have the redirect fearure
