What Is a Website and What Is a Blog

Before we move on to the difference between a blog and a website, it would be nice to define these terms.

Of course, you could find the definitions on the vast internet but it is likely to run into a strange set of words that may not make sense to you.

So what is a website?

Any resource located on the internet can be defined as website. News portal, forums, online store, and even the blog – people are used to call all of the aforementioned examples as a website.

And you know, there is some truth in it, as the word “site” in English language is translated as “place”. In other words, the website is a place in the World Wide Web, belonging to any owner (webmaster), and all the examples listed above are just a kind of website.

Thus, a short definition of the blog is that it is just one type of website.

But let’s get to the more precise definition of a blog.

As a rule, websites and blogs are created with a single purpose – to share information with the audience.

However, website owners never talk about themselves, do not ever share their life events and do not stay in touch with their audience. On the other hand, bloggers not only share their knowledge on a particular topic, but also are completely open to their audience.

And to be even more precise, a blog is a kind of online diary that absolutely everyone can read.

I hope I was able to deliver the basic idea of what those two terms are.

So now let’s move to the next question and try to understand what the difference between a blog and a website is.

Thanks Zarnia, quick question. Can you connect the two together? (have your web site accessible via your blog)

You're welcome.
I am not sure exactly what do you mean by having website accessible via blog - I assume you mean having a link on your blog to your website? That is possible for sure.
Also, I know of the "hybrid" websites, which is basically a website, but has certain features of a blog (like author information is available).
Personally, I have a page where I post my links to my trainings/blogposts at WA. Feel free to check it out at lifeinkaizenstyle.com

You can have a website with a 'blog' menu page on it. You can write a blog post to refer traffic to your website. The more traffic you refer to your website through your blog posts, the more popular your website will become in the eyes of Google and other search engines. That's you are going to attract more traffic to your site and that's how your site will get ranked higher on search engines, hence more conversions etc.

This is great Zarina, I loved reading this. I have often had people ask me what the difference is between a blog and a website.

Although one thing stands out for me... I have websites in different niches (4 in total) and I will be adding more in the future. So I will be a blogger with more than one blog :)

Hello - great training article - so many people are unaware that blogs and websites for larger scale eCommerce are totally different.

So and newcomers can see what can really happen I've simply used my own experiences using WA since Sept 2015 to see if WA works as I have commercial experience of shopping cart systems and sites.

I use both types of website (eStore AND Blog via WA training - 1 for selling and 1 for blogging - giving extra info, chatting with visitors and as a kind of diary as you say here.

With a little care different types of site can be easily linked and support each other. Online shops can sell products faster but need so much work it sometimes takes a couple of people to run shop type sites at least. And there's advertising fees involved.

With a blog I can give a great deal of info, advice etc and build audience trust. I found personally that adding 3-4 articles to a my new blog site each week for 3 months then started to generate and grow revenue from the blog site with no advertising fees. I have personally seen blog site sales start after 3 months this year.

It is important to understand the difference from the beginning if possible as this can save a lot of redesign work later.

Many thanks for showing us this - all the very best - Andre.

So, if I read this right, the basic set-up is the same. It's the style of writing that really defines it. I think I have a website where I do semi formal reviews and also informal posts. So I am either a mutant or hybrid! This is a nice casual training that is easy to read and summarises the matter nicely.

Hi Helen,
You are right to the point! :)
To be honest, on my own website I have 3 main categories (pages), one more project related (deep philosophical stuff about personal development), second is "My Journal" where I have more informal articles about things I've tried, done or follow on a daily basis. And now I also added a page titled "Training" where I simply post my links to WA training.
I could probably be hybrid type as well! :D

Thank you for your comment and I will see you around!
