How To Choose Which URL To Use

You may have noticed by now that domain names can be written in one of two ways e.g.:

For the end user there is really no difference, but for you the site owner it is quite important that you set things up to use only one or the other.

Firstly you need to decide which one to use; if it’s a new domain then you have a free choice.

However if it’s an existing domain you will be better off picking the URL that most often occurs in Google.

It is possible to change what Google displays, but this takes time and there is often a reason they picked one version over the other, for instance one version may already have more backlinks.

So how do we check what Google has us under? We use the search term:

Site:senuke-x.info

So here we can see that Google has selected the WWW variant, and so that is the one we will be using from now on.

One thing I should point out is that if the domain is new and you are choosing which one to have then it can be technically easier when working with DNS later on if you select the WWW version, in particular if you have your hosting with Hostgator.

However ultimately the choice is yours.
