You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

There is a quick search feature available to you right within the Jaaxy menu. You simply click on the menu and it will pop up the submenu, with the search available right within it.

You can see I have entered "increase vertical jump" into the search (as shown below).

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

After performing the search, you will simply want to click the "magnifying glass" icon or press enter on your keyboard.

Here are how the search results look for the "increase vertical jump" search.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/3 completed
2. Perform at Least 5 Searches Using Jaaxy (do as many as you want though)
3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

I think I have chosen my niche, its eyewear/sunglasses. There are several reasons for this choice, I'm fairly familiar with most of the top brands. My personal favorite is Oakley, between ophthalmic and sun I have 14 pairs, ok I'm a freak for Oakley!
Admitting it is the first step right? LOL I can speak with some authority in this category as I am a licensed dispensing optician with 32 years of experience in manufacturing, sales and service of the top brands. What do you think? Good place to start?

Ken

PS Oakley has apparel too, just sayin. :-)

Sounds like you are on the right path with a good foundation. Have you gotten into Jaaxy or WA to do the keyword searches for SEO? This will help you get a better understanding for domain names, titles and then your content posts.

Hi - it's a good choice, and your experience will gain you trust with your readers. However, do be aware, that you won't be able to just take images from Google or other websites until you are accepted by an affiliate program, who will supply the photos.

You can only use copyright-free images, which are difficult to find for branded products. Luckily, you have your own products, so you can use photos you take yourself.

Hi m8.
I'm a starter too. But reading your post, I can tell that you are a man with a vision. And sunglasses are one of the most popular things. Kids wear it so as adults. 32 years of experience. Man, you must rock this thing up. :)
Wish you much luck.

Thank you, for me it just made sense to fall back on what I know. I retired from optical about 3 years ago and went into trucking. Due to health reasons I've decided to leave trucking and am hopeful that this new adventure will be lucrative enough to sustain me. No longer trading time for money would definitely be a blessing in itself. Good luck to you in your journey with WA! I hope it exceeds your wildest dreams.

I am having trouble with the widgets. I have been able to create a new "footer" at the bottom of the page, however I have not been able to make changes to the "side bar" (its called "blog sidebar"), I am not sure what I am doing wrong,
Thanks,

Wes

Yes, then you can add whatever widgets you like to the blog sidebar and upon doing that, it will show up when you refresh your website in your browser.

What is happening when you try doing this?

Hello Kyle,

Thanks, it is specifically when I try to add a "video" widget and a "gallery" widget they do not show up. Most all other widget choices will be added to menu but not video and gallery

Affiliate links question!

If I would have an affiliate link on my website too, let's say an amazon product, will I only get paid if the customer buys the product the first time he goes to that affiliate page? Or could the customer log off and then come back to the affiliate page weeks later and buy and I would still get the money?
Reply
Jeffreybs Premium
Most affiliate programs have a period that your cookies that tell them the visitor came from your site, but every affiliate program usually is a little different.

Another thing you are going to like even if they don't buy the product on your site but use your link to get to the affiliate site and purchase a completely different product you will get credit so if you get lucky and they spend a big chunk of money from your link you will earn more money

Choosing affiliate programs that pay 15% commission and higher is what I recommend if you are serious about earning as much money as you possibly can, so don't join the first program until you shop around for the highest paying programs within the niche you choose

I hope this helps

It doesn't matter when that person buys the product. As long as they go to the Amazon website through your affiliate link and complete the purchase within 24 hours of entering via your link, you will get the commission.

Good to see your hard at work there, Alexander.
Amazon has a 24-hour cookie system and the person can buy other items as well and you get the commissions.
Reply
alexander81 Premium
Ok! Does anybody know if it is always 24 hours? I want to be affiliate for a product that takes months of planning for the buyer... They will not buy that within 24 hours...The link has to be valid for at least three months...

Good question, been wondering about this myself.
To the Wealthy Affiliate community all the best over the festive season and the new year as well.

Good question but you will find it difficult to find many of the small paying affiliate programs such as Amazon to ever give you months from someone using your link but what you can do is insert more of your past posts to get more people to see past product links.

Hi Alexander - one way you could get round this would be to get your visitors onto a mailing list.
Have you bought this product yourself? Do you know how to plan to get it - is there a way you can smooth the process for your visitors?
If there is then you could supply that info in an emailing series that would end up with you supplying the Amazon link at the end of each email.

I am promoting programs that pay 15% and higher in commissions and the longest cookie duration in any of my programs is 30 days and not many of them will go that long

You might want to check into dropshipping instead of affiliate marketing for what you are wanting, you can open an online store on your website to promote drop shipping products as well

Alexander - just found out that Amazon does have a 90 day cookie (sort of). You can find more info if you search for 'Amazon Affiliate 90 Day Cookie' on your favourite search engine.
Reply
Jeffreybs Premium
That is great news, what do you mean sort of
Jeff
Reply
DValentine Premium
From what I've seen Jeff, if the shopper gets onto Amazon through you link and places a product into their shopping cart, the link lasts until the shopping cart expires (usually 90 days) - so it's not really a cookie but kinda acts like a cookie.
Reply
alexander81 Premium
yes and it is strange cause it has to be the same for other affiliates that have links to these products today, products that cost around 200000$, I wonder who buys that within 24 hours...
Reply
DValentine Premium
That depends on where in the customer buying cycle you connect with them.
If someone types in 'Maserati' into a search engine, they are unlikely to be in a position to buy the car but if someone types in 'maserati Ghibli Granturismo price' they are closer to buying the thing.
If they're typing in 'where can I buy a Maserati Ghibli Granturismo near me' they are very close to buying one.
So, you need to discover the search terms being used by folks who are close to buying the product and use those search terms in your content.

If I build a free domain website and later want to move it to a domain I own, do the followers I have on the free domain move as well? Will they still be able to find it the same as they did before? Does the Google rating/locator start over?

Hi Chelsea, well that would be a Yes, Yes, No

everything is transferred safely and securely when you buy a domain name. Google will not punish you, in fact, when you buy a .com domain you will rank higher in Google

the rankings will drop for a bit as with any major change, but redirection is setup to allow your previous visitors to find your new site - this is one reason for leaving your old site up for a month after moving.
if you go into sitemanager and click on details you wil lsee what you are getting with your site as a starter member
your site will be https - all wa sites are now - or have the ability to be secure.
good luck chelsea

somebody please help me out. I have chosen "baby clothing" as my niche, so i have a question here, since i will be making a collection of baby fashion how do I get all the clothing infos and display them on my website and since I might be choosing amazon, ebay or walmart. and since my affiliation would directly to them so, do I have to get their clothing images from their websites or is it the other way around. do I have to get my own images and still be able to match their fashion stores and direct traffic to them.

Hi - all the images on your site have to be copyright-free. They will be difficult to find, if you want to promote branded products. You can't just copy and paste the images from Google or other websites.

Once you have applied to join affiliate programs such as Amazon, if you are approved, then they will supply you with images that you are allowed to use.

By the way, is baby clothing a subject you are genuinely interested in? You will be expected to write lots of articles on your chosen niche, as that is how you attract visitors to your website.
Reply
Jeffreybs Premium
why did you choose baby clothing, I just am not sure if this is the right niche for you.

Maybe you should take more time to think about your niche, you don't want to jump into a niche unless you really have an interest in the topic and the products

Just trying to help
