NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

Hello everyone,

I need some help with a problem I have with my site side menu. I have a home page that when you click on it it takes you to my posts. My home page is listed at the top.

Top menu: Home, About Me, Privacy Policy
Search Box
Recent Posts Menu: Lists my recent posts individually

The problem I am experiencing is when "Home" is accessed, it has all of my posts in order, but with no comment feature at the bottom for user comments.

Users can only comment if they access my posts from the "recent posts" menu and not within the home page.

Shouldn't the home page only have a menu of my posts instead of the full readable posts?

My site is located at www.dogbertpets.com if you need to see what I am explaining.

Ok! I went back and checked out my homepage again and their is a comment box available for each post, but it is just written at the bottom and you have to click on it in order to be able to comment.

I don't know if I like that because it is really difficult to see it in order to click on it.

I still think the homepage should only have a menu of my posts instead of actually being my blog page. I took a Wordpress course but it was much different than what is being taught here. That is because most everything is pre-set beforehand. That is why it is difficult to find where to change things like colors and such.

Hi - I think the problem lies in the fact that you can read your posts in full on the home page. You can change that, so it only shows the first couple of lines, and then has a "read more" button.

There are two ways of doing this. When in WordPress, go to Settings and Reading. Change the option to summary, rather than full text. If that doesn't work, open up each post individually, then on the row of icons above it, is a square-shaped one. Use this to insert "read more" wherever you want it to appear.

Have you purposely set your menus to be on the left of the screen, or is that how it is with the theme? It looks odd, most menus are usually on the right, otherwise, it interrupts the natural flow of reading.

I tried your suggestions and changed to summary and when that did no results, I went to one of the posts and inserted a "read more" right after the first paragraph and that did not change. What is up here? Personally, I wouldn't have chosen the home page to post the blog. The home page is usually a static page. I was just following the course and the way it is, is the way that the course instructed. I just figured I would change it to a static page later.

The menus are that way in the theme.

Hi - one of your posts has changed. Try refreshing your browser when you have made any changes. Your device will probably be holding an earlier version of your site.

I couldn't find where to change the colors of the text so I just set the underlined text to bold so they stand out.

Hope this helps some!

I will go for multi niche with two different website. They are all great ideas, and if you are passionate about the two then go for them concurrently.

I was thinking the same. Start with 2 different websites. Thanks for the encouragement

Hi - they are both good ideas. Pick which one you are most passionate about, and would enjoy writing about. As a beginner, it is not advised to work on 2 websites at once.

You need to add high-quality, original content on a regular basis, ideally 2 or 3 times per week. This can be difficult to achieve for just one website.

It is better to concentrate on one website and give it your absolute maximum effort, rather than trying to maintain 2 sites and perhaps end up rushing to add poorly written content.

I can understand it can be overwhelming and time consuming. Ill take it slow. Looks like I will have something to look forward to after getting the 1st website up.

Personally, I would go with the hair. I tried to sell bras and girdles for overweight women and sold nothing at all.

Women are more into their hair than girdles. I think!

Choose the one you feel like you know more about when it comes to its content knowledge as well as experience

Take it from someone who wasted several years and take your time choosing a niche you are going to be content and happy with.

Every time you change your niche you are starting all over, and whatever niche you choose you will earn an income it will just take time as long as there is a demand

Try to remember that generally one niche per website. That way you can be more defined in your target audience. I hope this helps. Peace, Mark.

The decision is yours alone. If you wish to develop a website, decide on what you want to pursue based on your passion of that niche. Continue with the lessons before you. That will help you to decide what is best. I hope this helps you. Peace, Mark.
