This is going to be a bit advanced for most. But, it's a powerful effective SEO strategy.....just a headsup.........

First up, a wee bit of terminology:

Dofollow. It is a type of link which has a potential to improve the ranking and the credibility of your website in Google. By default every link is dofollow, link which does not contain Rel=”Nofollow” Attribute is dofollow and these are considered to be the most powerful links for any websites.

Nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct search engines bots that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring in the first place. This is a concept introduced by Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen in the year 2005.

Nofollow links attributes do not allow search engine bots to follow link. That means if the website owner is linking back to you with nofollow attributes, it does not pass on link juice. Only Humans will be able to follow the links. Though some time back Google made it clear that they don’t consider nofollow link attributes but weightage of such links are really less. Even though, it’s a good practice to use Nofollow link attribute to those link, where you don’t want to pass link-juice.

Example of Nofollow Link:

Of course coding all your links like the above can be quite tedious and slow you down. Thereby, I use the Ultimate NoFollow plug-in shown in the video above. Okay, cool..... moving on.......

Link Juice: PowerLinking SEO and Ultimate NoFollow

As you may know, Google, Bing and Yahoo have come a long way and can "de-value" a blog article that is just full of affiliate links.

It's not that having affiliate links is a bad thing, it's simply that it appears as over-promotional. The search engines would rather see an article that provides a plethora of information on a topic and truly helps the reader.

Therefore, it's a good idea to have a few "outbound" links to authority websites within your niche market. For example, if I have an article on knee injuries and I'm promoting a knee brace product, I might have a few anchor-text keywords linked out to WebMD, the Mayo Clinic and perhaps a Orthopedic website. This, along with my article that has great structure and covers all the aspects of knee injuries and my primary keyword with secondary keywords will show the search engines that my article IS a "resource article".

So, when I allow someone to Guest Post on my primary website, I always require a minimum of two outbound links to authority websites. I have this requirement in my Guest Post guidelines.

Now, that being said. I set these links to NO-Follow. Because I don't want to give away any of my link juice. The only links I have that are DO-Follow are my internal links and perhaps the one link from any Guest Post author that is typically within their signature block under their provided article. This is one of the major reasons they want to Guest Post on my high DA (Domain Authority) website. Their link on my website helps their ranking within the search engines. This is also known as "Link Juice".

You may have seen diagrams like what I have provided above. This is one of many linking strategies that is based on link juice. The Web 2.0, Social Bookmarks and Guest Post are valuable to boost your website. BUT.... when you back up those main four links with promotions, it makes the four main links even more powerful.

Link Juice has a cascading power effect. Other SEO professionals (myself included) also call this "tiered linking".

Here's another more simple way to depict this:

So, your website is at the top. The Tier 1 link may be a Guest Post, or perhaps an article on a Web 2.0 website such as Live Journal, Tumblr, Quora, etc. The Tier 2 sites could be a Wiki link or a forum link and so on.

Also, the important thing in this strategy is to use Anchor-Text keyword links on Tier 1 and perhaps Tier 2.

So, Tier 3 gives power to Tier 2. Making Tier 2 more powerful than if it was by itself, with no backup.

Tier 2 then gives power to Tier 1. And, because there are three Tier 2s, each backed by two Tier 3s, that makes Tier 1 VERY powerful when it points to your website.

This is cascading link juice and can help get a tough, competitive page ranked higher than your competition.

Now, you want all of these to be DoFollow .... OR the Link Juice is NOT passed on. Because a NoFollow link tells the search engine's crawling bots to STOP and go no further.

And, using that same logic, when you create outbound links from YOUR blog articles on your site, they should be NoFollow with the exception of links to your other pages and posts (internal linking) and the link that a Guest Poster on your website would request.

Again, the reason someone wishes to guest post on my primary website is for the link juice as well as for branding him/herself as an authority on a topic.

As I said in the first sentence above, this is ADVANCED for most folks here. But, a few of you that I have worked with are at the stage where you can learn from this training. You know who you are and I'm so proud of you! Others will get to this stage at some point, I'm certain of it! So, please bookmark!

Thanks PJ, you have assured me that I have been using the "noFollow" attribute correctly. Initially I thought that only affiliate links should be nofollow but I have come to learn that all links leaving my site are best if they are nofollow.

I always make sure to leave my internal links as dofollow like you said.

I have been using the rel Nofollow checkbox plugin, but I think it is causing some issues since the latest wordpress update. Whenever I open the link edit box to check on the "no follow" box and click "apply", the little add link pop up won't go away and stays stuck on the screen...very annoying to say the least.

I think I am going to take a look at the plugin that you have recommended. I imagine it works similarly to the one I am using? The option to click no follow is made available when you go into link options?

Sorry, I didn't watch the video, so maybe you covered it there.

Ah, yes, Tanja, you're correct on all your statements. Excellent!!!

That IS odd. Mine primary website is fully upgraded to the latest WP. I'm not having that issue with the wee popup. Weird.

Yea, you may wanna switch to this one.

Thanks again for the awesome feedback!!!

Just switched plugins and I no longer have to deal with the link pop up box sticking! I was worried when I saw this plugin hasn't been upgraded in 7 months (that was the issue with the other one I was using), but it works perfectly!

Ok, now I am confused. It is back to keeping the add link pop up sticking on my page. It worked fine yesterday and today its back to its old tricks.

Excellent break down for the new folks. It takes work to succeed and you can if you apply proven techniques such as you wrote about here you can do very well. On another note, I would find it a bit hard though if you had a guess post and zero link juice goes to the poster. Why would they post? Other than to get your traffic if any.

Agreed, the only other value is to entice the website owners readers to visit the guest posters site.

Thanks a bunch, David!
