Verification Through FTP
Obviously we can’t just add a site and then get access to it. That would be pretty crazy. So we need to verify it.
Google gives us a few options here and you can use any of them that you feel comfortable with. There is the first way that Google recommends, and then there is a couple of alternative methods. I’m going to show you the recommended way, and then an alternate method (easier in my opinion) way to verify.
If you have All in One SEO or Yoast SEO and you want to check out the easier alternate method, I've got a special page just for you. Head over and check out the next page.
However, if you are adventurous and like doing everything the recommended way, I've got you covered as well! Lets dive right in.
Step 1. Click Download this HTML Verification File & save it somewhere you will easily remember (Maybe your desktop?)
Step 2. Download FileZilla.
FileZilla is a free FTP client for both Mac and PC. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is how Google is recommending us to verify our site with them. After it is installed, open the program up.
https://filezilla-project.org/ - download here.
Step 3. Uploading our HTML File To Our Website
After install, click file, then site manager.
This may look slightly different for you, if you have a PC. It shouldn't be much different though. Once site manager is accessed it will look like this. Click New Site and Name it.Okay so now we have to input some informationHost: Put your domain here.
Port: Blank
Protocol: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Encryption: Only use plain FTP (insecure)
Logon Type: Normal
Now we need to get our username and password. If you use Wealthy Affiliate to host your website you can find these credentials by going to your SiteRubix Manager. If you use another company to host your site, a quick Google search for FTP username and password for "whatever company" should help you out. Either way they are usually under the site details of your web hosting company.
Enter your FTP Username and Password into the User and Password of FileZilla and click connect!
You will see log details as seen below.
If you see red letters telling you that there is an error, you might have entered in something wrong. Go back through the steps and try again. Finally! Now were connected.
Alright now were going to pick where the HTML file is going to be uploaded to. On the right double click the folder called httpdocs. Be careful because there is a folder right underneath is that is called httpsdocs and that is not the one to click.
Now in the file viewer mid left, click desktop (or whatever directory you saved your Google HTML file in)
Mine was under downloads which yours will be automatically unless you switched it to desktop like I advised. Either way right-click your Google HTML file and click upload. Now just had back over to your Google Verification Page and click Verify and your done!
Quick question, Does the email address used for site id and the email address of the Google account need to be the same?
I wanted to use the easy method, as I am not comfortable with adding code yet- know I can do it, but was just wanting to funnel the information from Google to another account.
Thank you,
Sami
My fault I'm sure.
