Adding your website to Google Search Console is an important step in setting up your business. This will help Google to find and index your website and new content.

Google Search Console was previously known as Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) and many people still refer to it as GWT.

You can access Google Search Console here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/

Follow the instructions in the video to do the following:

  • Add your website to Google Search Console
  • Verify your website through Google Analytics
  • Submit your sitemap to Google
  • Fetch As Google

It is important to set up your Google Analytics first in order to verify Google Search Console - How To Add and Verify Google Analytics

Hi Lynne
Many thanks for this training. I am trying to follow the training. The verification is not going ok because I was to copy a link and add to the DNS configuration of my website. But I don't know where to get the DNS configuration. I need help please. Segun

Your DNS has nothing to do with verifying with Google - please explain what it is that you are trying to do? If you are trying to change your Domain Name Servers to WA there is other training for that!

If you are wanting to verify your website with Google Search Console you need to do it one of the ways I show in this video. I don't know any way to verify using DNS, I am sure that you have something misunderstood here.

I have the same problem... Did you find how to solve this? /Ellen

Ellen you don't want to add anything to your DNS settings for verifying your website with Google Search Console - I recommend you follow the video and do it through Google Analytics.

Hello. I noticed that for the "Fetch Google" part that you have requested indexing for multiple pages and posts on your site. Do you have to do it for every post and page on your site or do you only select a few important pages for Google to fetch, thanks.

Hi Sahara :) Actually I don't do this anymore for any of my sites under normal circumstances because my content gets indexed and ranked almost immediately because all my websites are well established. I did this for every new post when my websites were new though.

My site is fairly new and I have over 100 blog posts, but I also sell products also - do you think that I should request indexing for all my posts and pages or just pick a handful of common landing pages for indexing and ranking

I would say that your website is probably indexing quite fast already, maybe just send through some of your most important pages for now and then only do the important ones in future. It has been very rare for me the last few years to not have content ranked and indexed almost immediately.

Hi Lynne, Thanks for taking the time to do this for us. I have a problem with one of my sites. It has been unloved for some time now (three years - ouch) for many reasons and I am now reviving the old content. So first thing I want to do is add to GA and GSC. All my other four sites some also unloved have been verified using Google Analytics no problem. With this site I have to mention that it use to have a URL hudsonrickman/wealthyaffiliateforall.com but this stopped working and site support in WA examined it and changed it to wealthyaffiliateforall.hudsonrickman.com. GA worked fine but not the verification in GSC using GA. So now I find I have to down load a file from GSC to be uploaded to the root of my site (?). Whereabouts is this please and do I need to use something like cPanel (whatever that is) to upload it? I did ask site support how to do this and they referred me to your training above which is why you are getting the question - sorry. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. I have no idea why I cannot verify with GA as the ownership of the site is the same as all the others I have, Thanks and Best regards, Hudson

Is your website hosted here at WA Hudson? If so you don't have access to your cpanel - you can upload your files and verify your site through your root directory using Filezilla - here is the training for that: Alternatively if your website is hosted elsewhere you can add files to your root directory through your cpanel. Let me know and I can find some training for you if the Filezilla one is not going to work for you.

Hi Lynne, Thank you very much for your quick response. My site is hosted here at WA, so I should be able to use FileZilla as you suggest. I will give it a go and let you know how I get on. Again many thanks, Hudson.

Perfect, you should be able to get that right through Filezilla then. It is strange that it won't verify normally but I had that struggle with one of my websites a few years back. I tried so many different things and then I gave up for a few weeks and when I tried again it just verified first time. Maybe it is just a gremlin and it will move off soon.

Hi there. Thanks for your advice. I ended up talking to site support and they added the meta tag line from the GSC verification process into the PHP header of my site , and I was then able to get the verification through. Best regards, Hudson.

does SSL have to be on in order for this to work correctly
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
No you don't have to have SSL to have this work correctly but I do highly recommend that you do active SSL before doing this simply because you will need to do SSL at some stage and then you will need to redo this process.

is it ok to turn it on when we choose or do we need to wait until it comes up on the training?

I would do it as soon as possible - here's some training by Alan that you can follow:

After I've moved to my own domain within the WA platform, do I need to go and adjust anything in the Google Search Console or Google Analytics. I'm pretty sure I don't, but just want to hear it from the pro's out there please :-)
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
You bought your own domain? And previously it was on a site.rubix?
Reply
Momy Premium
Yes that's right. I only bought the domain today, after I've set up everything below - don't ask why but I was delaying committing to purchase my own domain ;-)
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Oooohhh then you will need to redo the Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools! Make sure your SSL is switched on before you do everything again otherwise you will need to go back and do it AGAIN! Sorry for the confusion.

After I've done the crawling and fetching the post on Google search console, the status shows redirected...? Advise please?
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
Don't worry about that :) It is fine. As long as it was crawled that is good to go.

Do I want to do any of this before my website has reached a certain level? I posted my first article but still need to go through all the other stages of perfecting the site in terms of appearance, photo's etc.

Thank you, Lynne!

I have a question if you know the answer.

Under the column Status in Fetch as Google, instead of the green checkbox and message "Complete," it shows yellow box and "Redirect" message.

Do you have an idea if this is an issue and should I do something to turn it green?

Thank you,
Anton

Perhaps you have your GWT set up as http but you have activated your security certificate and now your website is https? There are a number of different ways get to your website for eg http://www.yourwebsite.com

When it comes up as a redirect it is not necessarily a bad thing, check to see if you have any crawl errors.

Have you set your preferred domain? If you have more than one domain set up eg http and https you need to tell Google which is your preferred domain.

Thank you, Lynne!

I have set only one URL, and maybe there is some other reason. At the same time, I don't have any errors, so I will leave as it is for now.
Reply
LynneHuy Premium
If there are no errors I wouldn't worry at all, Google will still crawl your site. The Fetch As Google tool is actually so that you can see how Google sees your website and as it so happens it also sends Google to your website which is why it helps with indexing. So something there is redirecting.

Aah, awesome, this is exactly the training my Mom needs right now. Thanks Lynne.
Did you see Dominic's post about using Add URL instead of Fetch as Google? It's much simpler and more effective.
