Adding your website to Google Search Console is an important step in setting up your business. This will help Google to find and index your website and new content.

Google Search Console was previously known as Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) and many people still refer to it as GWT.

You can access Google Search Console here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/

Follow the instructions in the video to do the following:

  • Add your website to Google Search Console
  • Verify your website through Google Analytics
  • Submit your sitemap to Google
  • Fetch As Google

It is important to set up your Google Analytics first in order to verify Google Search Console - How To Add and Verify Google Analytics

Thank you, Lynne!

I have a question if you know the answer.

Under the column Status in Fetch as Google, instead of the green checkbox and message "Complete," it shows yellow box and "Redirect" message.

Do you have an idea if this is an issue and should I do something to turn it green?

Thank you,
Anton

Perhaps you have your GWT set up as http but you have activated your security certificate and now your website is https? There are a number of different ways get to your website for eg http://www.yourwebsite.com

When it comes up as a redirect it is not necessarily a bad thing, check to see if you have any crawl errors.

Have you set your preferred domain? If you have more than one domain set up eg http and https you need to tell Google which is your preferred domain.

Thank you, Lynne!

I have set only one URL, and maybe there is some other reason. At the same time, I don't have any errors, so I will leave as it is for now.

If there are no errors I wouldn't worry at all, Google will still crawl your site. The Fetch As Google tool is actually so that you can see how Google sees your website and as it so happens it also sends Google to your website which is why it helps with indexing. So something there is redirecting.

Aah, awesome, this is exactly the training my Mom needs right now. Thanks Lynne.
Did you see Dominic's post about using Add URL instead of Fetch as Google? It's much simpler and more effective.
