Let's Find Out How To Start Using Windows Speech Recognition

1/ From the image seen above, click on the first heading Start Speech Recognition.

This will open into a new window similar to the one see below:

2/ This is known as the Speech Recognition Control Panel, from here you will speak to the computer and you will see that it shows that it is listening to you. In the image above however, it is Sleeping, waiting for the command,"Start Listening" - or for you to click on the microphone if you haven't enabled the setting to start speech recognition automatically.

3/ Before you start speaking/dictating to the computer, remember to have the application open if you aren't going to ask the computer to open it!

4/ Continue speaking to the computer in this manner using Windows Speech Recognition, using the tools you gained from the tutorial. If in doubt, just start the tutorial again, or leave a question below in the comments section.

Now that we know How To Use Windows Speech Recognition, let's find out How To Train Your Computer to better understand your speech

Thanks for the compliment about the dogs. Just have the redhead now. lost the black one just before Christmas. He was 15 1/2 years old but was losing kidney function.

Even though he still had energy to chase the other one, we knew it was time and we didn't want him to suffer.

WE do miss him a lot but all is good and we still have the other.

I'm so sorry to hear that Wayne! I do a lot of house-sitting and that includes looking after pets... there have been some tragic moments with a few clients when their dogs suffer so much that they have no alternative. It is very hard but we process it and move on.

The remaining pets are always a comfort in these times.

Great training and very useful. I am just wondering whether I can play Kyle's video tutorials and Voice recognition will type Kyle's words. If it can, how?

That's an interesting question and my guess is anything is possible. You would have to chose the right microphone though.

I would suggest using a stand alone mic that pics up the sound coming from the speakers in the computer, just make sure you don't get feedback.

Nice training! I just picked up Dragon Naturally Speaking for free from a friend and am fumbling through that but I think I like the look and ease of use of Windows Speech Recognition. Thanks for taking the time creating this!

Do you know if you friend can get me a copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking? I do a lot of teaching and it would be an asset to assist other. And also to create a training tutorial on it.

I just don't have that kind of budget at all.

Thanks, I did that exactly you have shown with a pro tech support; however, I must now call Microsoft to complete the process. It does not follow my voice as it should. I may not call because now.....

I have started using Google Docs....All good so far... It is free...

Did you set up the microphone properly?

I found that was the problem most of the time when the typing came out garbled.

Are you able to provide a screenshot of the error in Windows Speech Recognition that says it does not follow your voice?

Have you done the Speech Recognition Voice Training part of the tutorial, that does take some time?

I appreciate your help. I have done everything according to the pros who actually took over my computer and they were unsuccessful. that is why they told me to contact Microsoft. It hears me but doesn't respond to me...I may...

Sometimes the pros miss something simple.

Do you have a screenshot of the error?

Which version of Windows are using? Win7, Win8, Win10 or other platform?

2/ Do you have a PC Desktop or Laptop
3/ Have you tweaked the microphone settings within Windows?

I'd really like to help you get this up and running.

1/ Have you selected the 3rd Option in the Microphone settings, namely - Other?
2/ When you speak to the computer, whilst it's listening, does it show, Typing letter keys, or What Was That?
3/ Have you been through the entire Speech Recognition Voice Training section so the computer can recognize your voice?

Do you know how to take screenshots?
