In this quick video tutorial I'll show you how to set up your website with a static home page, or landing page, instead of the default blog roll.

Thank you for this. I followed the directions and it worked perfect.. I can't figure out how to have the rest of my posts show up now though. They are obviously still showing in the blogroll but I'd like to have links to the individual posts on the home/landing page. I'd also like to have the categories area to be on home page too. Can anyone help?

This is usually accomplished by creating a static page and selecting the appropriate template for the page. It may also require setting up widgets for that page. What theme are you using?

Instead of having your categories appear as links on your static page itself, a better way to show them is to place a link in your main menu. This way from anywhere on your site the user can navigate to other categories and pull up your other posts without always having to go back to the home page.

Hey Eric,

Wow... your video really helped me set up my blog page a blog roll. It was sooo simple to do... took me a few days to figure this out before I found your video.

Question... Do I need to keep my "Home" page... it defaults to my website URL. Can I just delete this "Home" page?

Thank you.

Monica

There’s nothing wrong with having a “home” link in your main menu to get back to home, but with most you can just click on the site name to take you back, so it’s up to you.

Colleagues,
I am working on setting up of my homepage. I referred to the video training material by Ericcantu. Screenshot is attached hereto for information. It looks like my WordPress version 4.9.6 does not give you the option to select DISPLAY LOCATION when setting up MENU. How to overcome this problem? Appreciate your suggestions.

Hello,
I typed into the search bar "how to set up static" and got a good listing of trainings available, including the one by Ericcantu. Maybe one of the others can give you the needed information.
Also, it is my understanding that some of the available themes have different capabilities. I am not any type of tech so my best advice is to check out the training classrooms or maybe someone in LiveChat can be of more assistance.
To Success!

I never did know how some websites had landing pages and others blog rolls, I thought all this time it was from which them you chose.

Very interesting

Great video thanks a lot for this valuable information.

Please help, I'm confused. After creating the blogroll, will posts automatically land there, or would I have to put them there manually?

Not at all Eric. Thank you really.
Do not miss Lake Garda and Venice in the north, Florence if you love art history, Rome for its Ancient roman remains, then Sorrento, Capri and Ischia for the beautiful coasts, then Taormina in Sicily.
But there is so much more to see.
You will experience best cuisine of the world: watch out: you could fatten.
You could also stop by me. I live close to Bologna. Let me know when youll be here, if you wish.
Buon viaggio.

I do have a question come think of it. When your new posts are published (and these now will be on a static page) will this effect your exposure to search engines and people seeing your new posts?
Reply
Labman Premium
No, you will create a blog roll and new posts will be displayed at the top of the blog roll.
Reply
rroesel Premium
If you make a static page, it won't have any posts except for what you initially put on it. Your new posts will on the page(s) where you allow a bkogroll (multiple posts).

I think you got your question answered :) if you take a look again at the video you'll notice that the page I made called "Blogroll" is where all your new posts will end up, instead of being front and center on the "Welcome" static page.

Thanks to those who helped answer his question :) You guys are great.

Great tutorial! And a really good Wordpress theme will offer some helpful page templates. I use Genesis / Studiopress and there is a "Landing Page" template that I use for my homepage and other pages. It eliminates menus and sidebars and leaves nothing but the page content showing.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yes I believe that's a new feature going around alot of these themes. Landing pages are popular and it's an easy way of having a clean one. It's a great addition. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome! Great training!

Question: Can you do a tutorial on how to add the "special video or tutorial links" that everyone uses, for example to send someone to this tutorial? I've been here 17 months and I still cannot figure out how to do it? Embarrassed but gotta learn!
Reply
ericcantu Premium
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. What special links are you talking about? Are you talking about how they look like this?: All you do is go up top to the address bar and copy and paste the URL into any forum here or in live chat. The URL turns into the title of the link after you publish it. You don't have to do s thing :)
Reply
Easy-Moneys Premium
I understand the concept but when I'm in Live Chat the frame overlaps the URL....this is such a frustration for me....the Copy and Paste bits are always my downfall...even with a mouse!

Great training on static pages, I am sure many people will understand this much easier now. Maybe I will add a static page to my websites soon, it does make the website seem more friendly and professional.

This is interesting. We can only learn so much in training. I had no idea about Dashboard/Settings/Reading.

I like the way mine is right now but at least I know I can change my landing page from the blog roll to this way.

Thanks for the training it was really easy to understand. I always take notes and did with this also.
Reply
ericcantu Premium
I'm really glad you got some benefit from this and thank you for letting me know it was easy enough to understand. I'm always worried that people will watch a tutorial of mine and be like "what in the world is he even talking about?" lol. Thank you!
Reply
PatsyC Premium
Haha it's true, you don't know if you are explaining it thoroughly enough. Yes you are, no worries.

Sometimes what we write can be misunderstood by others when communicating this way.

If they don't get it they can comment and ask.

You are welcome :)

Good stuff. I've learned that a lot of this you just have to play around with. The more you use it the better you get. Thanks for taking the time for the training.
Reply
ericcantu Premium
Absolutely. Don't be afraid to tinker with your site especially in the early times when you're just building it. Later as it starts to develop content and traffic you'd of course want to be more careful with it so you don't break it, lol, but just like you said, you learn a lot just by playing around with it. Stick to the training brother, Kyle is a great teacher! thanks for checking out the video.
