Transferring blog content from one WordPress site to another is a predicament that so many WordPress website owners faced in the course of building their blogs.
The process of moving particular posts and/or pages to a new blog entails moving table rows from a database to another. And without the special knowledge of MySQL and a perfect idea of how databases work, there would be a serious challenge as a database management tool would have to be used directly.
Kudos to the Official WordPress Importer which is now a more realistic solution as it makes it possible to export any post to another site with the use of an XML file.
With the XML file, you can transfer:
- Pages, blog posts or any type of custom post
- Post Meta & Custom Fields
- Blog Authors
- Blog Comments; and
- Tags and categories
In today's training tutorial, I'll show you the key steps to importing and exporting posts and pages from one WordPress site to another. The process of getting this done doesn't require any special knowledge of MySQL at all.
Now, in order to be able to do the transfer successfully, you must have the login details to both sites. It would also be ideal to do a back-up for both sites before the transfer process takes place at all. This would make restoration a feasibility in case of any problem or issue.
This is very interesting. I have an old site with about 150 posts. However, I made the mistake of knocking out content really fast while not paying attention to the small, but really important details:
URLs
Keywords
Image names etc
As a result, I have lots of useful content that isn't getting ranked. I too know that it is bad to change URLs or content once published. So... I am considering building a new website.
Now for the questions:
1. Is it best to make the post improvements on the old site before moving it to the new one?
2. Do the new posts automatically have the URLS of the new site?
e.g.
Old. www.about-going-green.com/home-exercise-routines
New www.aboutgoinggreen.com/home-exercise-routines
3. Some of my posts have been developed in ThriveThemes, will this work be transferred over too?
I really appreciate your help!
Question is, what is the best way to delete all of those post (and it is a good amount) from the old site? I will get dinged if Google and others read that the content is duplicate content, right?
I never thought about the amount of work now that I am going to have to do to make these post good for the new blog. All of those links that were moved now need to be changed and redirected also.
