Good stuff.

But how does Google view this? I remember reading that Google's Penguin update looks down on masking links.

like i said below as long as you aren't deceiving your visitor by making your site look like a food site and after they click on it it redirects you to a porn site. This is basically getting rid of the super long link and making it look like they are not even leaving your site.

This is definitely something to be careful with. If your url doesn't show up as the same as Google Bot scans it, it'll be flagged & actually de-indexed or sandboxed from search results. Porn is one of the main reasons for this type of thing.

I read Matt cutts article on this and also watched his video and basically what he is saying is don't make your links deceiving, like don't make it look like a site about food on Google's end and after you click on your link have it be a porn site. But as long as it is the same site it should be fine. The main purpose of this process is just to shorten your link and make it look better, rather than having a super long link.

yea if you have a ton of different links this may not be as useful but if you don't have a whole lot this really comes in handy. I like it cause it looks like they are not even leaving your site and it looks professional.

Great training on PHP redirects. Just to add, don't cloak Amazon links it's against their terms. Also if you have a lot of different affiliate links, then a plugin like Petty Links may work better.

Yes, and as I mentioned on my post - GoCodes plugin is very good.
Check it yourself.
