Step 2: Get Your Google AdSense Ad Code

Once you’ve logged into your Google AdSense account, head over to the ‘My ads’ section on your main menu. Then click on 'New ad unit' to create your AdSense ad.

Here you will name your ad and choose which ad size and ad type you’d like to use for your site. Once you’ve done that, hit ‘Save and get code’.

Tip: Have each ad you use named differently to easily compare performance. This way you’ll know which ad is generating revenue or performing poorly by narrowing down different variables, e.g. ad location, ad size, ad type, etc.

After hitting ‘Save and get code’, a window will pop up on your screen (seen below). Here you’ll choose which code type you’d like to use and then highlight and copy the code (Mac: Command + C ; Windows: Ctrl + C).

Hi Bellabs,

Great training!

Did you have to input some code into your <head> code on each page when you set up adsense?

I can't seem to find anyone else online that has done this but when I signed up it told me to paste some code into my <head> on each page...

Hi Bellabs12
I'm back after 12 months slacking so I am a little rusty with everything but I saw your post and thought you may be able to help please?
I'm in the process of setting up adsense and google tells me to paste the code into the html of my site between the <head> and </head> tags. I've followed your tutorial (thank you!) but I can't see anything that says <head> or </head> anywhere. Have you any idea where I am going wrong please? Really appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you!

Hi, I tried adding the AdSense code the way you describe it, but when I check my site I can't see anything except two little square boxes that I've seen before, but that's all.

Wondering if anyone can help me with this?

The entire code I get from AdSense is this, and I realize that not all that's there is supposed to be pasted, but I don't know which is which. It includes the instructions:

Thanks for any help.

I followed your steps in this lesson but found 24hrs later that the only thing I'm seeing is blue boxes where I put these in, no ads in them. I know you said this could take a couple of days, so I just wanted to make sure that what I'm seeing is correct and I didn't do anything wrong. Is this what I should expect to see for the next couple of days?

Is there an adblocker turned on on your computer? This often makes it difficult to see the ads. Others will see them.

I don't think so, I can see the other ads I've posted from places like Amazon. It's just the Google Ad Sense ads that have nothing in them.

A great struggle I had and ultimately done. After getting ad sense it is important not to do blogs contrary to ad sense guidelines as an example adult blogs, some crime blogs, terrorism and hate crimes as I remember few from their policies . This has to be in mind when a new post is done .

Your steps in the Ad Sense lesson are very easy to follow. However, when I paste in the code from Google Ad Sense in Appearance/Widget/text and save, I do not get any changes in the website. It looks like I did not add anything. So, I am still perplexed. I am using WordPress with the Kakina theme. Any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is maybe you missed some of the text or maybe the widget is not in the right position for it to work. I looked at your theme and played around with it with a sample site and it seems to work fine.
Did you move the text widget to the right side of the widgets area under one of the Sidebars areas? That is the only thing I can think of, I am guilty of submitting text to a widget and forgetting to make it active by moving it to the right side of the widget area.
If you need more help let me know and I will be happy to help you figure this out.

I got google adsense a while ago because I have a youtube channel and I went back on there and it said that my ad units are not displaying ads because my pin hasn't been verified... I clicked to find out more info and it said I was supposed to get a letter in the mail after about 2-4 weeks that said my PIN# and I don't remember seeing anything like that. What do I do? did I do something wrong?

Hello, space pirate

The same thing is happening to me make sure that your address is correct because Google is going to send the letter to the address that is on their file. The letter contains a pin number that you need to use to verify your address. Be careful when trying to insert the pin you only have 3 chances to put your pin on the pin area or your account will be suspended.

Your PIN will be sent by post 3-5 days or it may take 2-4 weeks to arrive depending on the postal service

This is how the letter will look like

I put the text widget into the sidebar of my site. I pasted the code into the Text section of the "Blog Sidebar" and pushed save.

I checked my site. I SAW NOTHING!!! I mean, I hear you saying it's going to "blend in." Does Blend in mean INVISIBLE?

I went back to see that I really did save that html in the text widget of the blog sidebar. Yes! It was there - but not on the site - at least not visible!

I signed on for adsense last week. I paste their code hither and yon - results are always INVISIBLE!!! Can they see something I cannot? How long is three days in their universe? Why not communication?

I feel like such a dolt! I really don't get this!

Good news. AdSense did eventually approve my site. The code was invisible to me - but not to them. AFTER they approved my site the ads showed up just fine, although a little slow initially.

They aren't honest about the length of time it takes them to approve a site. There approval time is currently about 10-17 days.

I really feel your pain. I was pretty stressed out over this. Don't be! In truth you are doing just fine. You're not the problem - they are. When the ads show up your frustration and confusion will be a thing of the past.

All the best,

Hi bellabs 12,

I need your advise and certainly from the community about my AdSense Application.

On Thursday night 2/9 Google sent me a congratulations email that i was approved for my AdSense. I was so happy.

Yesterday around 1pm, I get another email from Google stating they like to do a 2nd review and they turned me down. Seemed very strange. Reason was lack of content and they explained what content is.

I felt I met all the criteria for content. 6 pages, 9 posts and almost 90 comments in the 3 weeks I have been indexed. Again not sure what I am missing?

I sent my request one more time and they turned it down a few hours later for same lack of content reason.

Would you mind giving your opinion of my site and what I could be missing? I really would like to use AdSense.

Always trying to learn and thanks for your help,

Marc

Hi, it's strange that they denied you. There is lot's of content on your site. I did notice however, that you have a text marker at the bottom of every page that says footer text center. That may lead them to think the site is incomplete.

I even did a Copyscape check on a few of your pages and there is nothing on there that would be considered duplicate content. It is strange. Would suggest posting to Google's Adsense forum and asking this question as well. Here's the url: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/adsense

Just received email back on AdSense forum question. Google stated that 15 pages/posts are minimum amount and the comments do not count. They stated they are looking for 30 to 50 pages/posts for approval.

Seems to contradict some sites I have seen with Adsense but we must move on.

Do you know of any other forms of Adsense not from Google that I may try?

When I build my site out some more I will try AdSense again

Hi Shapwa,

Create a page for you Privacy Policy, then create a menu that contains only your privacy policy page. After that is done, add a custom menu widget to your footer and assign it the menu you created for your privacy policy.

Interesting, I have a site with well over 5000 pages, so that is probably why I don't run into this any longer. There are a number of other systems out there that I have tried in the past but Adsense is about the easiest one to use. Not sure about acceptance though. A couple of others off the top of my head are Chitika, SmartLook, and Skimlinks.

Hi,

Don't know if the helps but when I signed up for mine, which was a few years back, they made two small transactions on my bank account and there was a confirmation code associated with the line items on my bank statement. If you signed up and asked for direct deposit, they may have done the same thing with you. If not, I think the only thing you can do is keep sending them messages.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

One small little complication, if you or any one else could help me with? Followed instructions 100%, every things good. Up until I paste and publish my widget with AdSense, only tells me that the link is broken. Like a webpage unable to load.

Attempted a couple times now with only two ads, with the same end result. Is this normal, or did things get screwy?

Thank you guys :)

Have you tried to copy and paste the adsense code into one of your pages? Try doing that but make sure you're in text mode and not visual mode. Make sure to save your page after you've pasted the code. I don't know if you need to log out of your site before it will appear. You may also want to clear your cache and/or refresh your page. Hopefully it will appear then.
Hope this helps!

Actually yes I did try that as well, and made sure I was in text mode. Tried a page and post.

The only thing I didn't do, that you mention is logging out. Didn't think that would matter, but its worth a shot. Same for clearing the cache.

I just went through your lessons and successfully (I think) I installed Adsense on my site.
There is now an empty space on the sidebar and if I click on it, it shows a blue empty space.
Now my question is: do I place just one ad or do I have to place more? If I want to place more I just repeat the process done for the first, right? How many ads am I allowed? If I want more ads, where is the best place for them?
Thanks. Ciao

Since I don't use a mouse I can't try to hover the cursor over it to see if there's any text inside. I pulled up my site in incognito mode, and it still is blank. Is this two step process new for Google Adsense? I'm not sure if i should be copying the code or wait .. in this thread it says to copy code straight away, as does Kyle's lesson ... so i did - now i'm hoping i didn't screw up things by doing so ... anyone know?

THIS is from Google Adsense:

Step 1. We conduct preliminary checks on your site and your details
For the first step, we make preliminary checks on the information that you submitted in your application. This can take up to a few hours. Once we've finished, we notify you by email to let you know whether your application has progressed to the second step of the review process.

Step 2. You place the ad code on your site and we complete our review
Once your application has successfully passed the first step, you need to place the ad code on your submitted site. It’s essential at this stage for you to place the ad code on your site, as the review process can’t be completed until the ad code is implemented

It would be best to wait. Until you are accepted as an affiliate. You will not receive any compensation during anytime you are not an affiliate and there is no guarantee that they will accept you and your site.

Hey there Belinda thx for this, worked great for me.

Just wondering, do you know if a single ad unit is set to auto-size, can a person simply use that one single ad unit throughout a site (ie in a sidebar widget as well as in main content on various pages) and have the whole thing work out OK?

The reason I ask this is because in the interest of keeping things as simple as possible, I would be happy to run with a single ad unit if it does the trick.

Cheers,

The adsense is up and running on my site now .. but if you visit my site, on each page the adverts are running on the footer of the pages under the comments..

My question is this.. with the layout of my site .. and it is just my impression, but the adverts i think would not get much exposure tucked in the bottom there. What do you think?

Would they be maybe better in skyscraper format under the information in the left bar? or somewhere else?

Just trying to make my site look professional, without to many ads dominating, but to put them in a position with better exposure and the more chance of them being noticed..!!

Any advice would be welcome..

Thanks all :)

Hi Bellabs12, This is really helpful information but have a question on naming your ad. What do you name it? Do you pick out which ad you want to place, if so where do you find that? also do you want an ad that is relevant to you niche.. I feel dumb..

Hi there MonicaY,

Don't feel dumb! Some of this stuff isn't the easiest to grasp the first time around. You don't pick which specific ads are placed on your site, you only pick the size of the ad and whether you want it to display text, images or both. Google Adsense displays ads based on the person viewing your site search activity. So if someone has been searching wedding rings online and stumbles on your site then most likely an ad for wedding rings will be displayed.

You name your ad whatever you want. So if you're placing the ad on a page or post, you can name it after that page or post so you can keep track of its performance. The name isn't for anything but to help you track each ad's performance.

Hope this helps!
