How to Auto Rrefresh Web Pages in Google Chrome Browser

There are times when we need to monitor a web page (s) during online research, or tracking a certain trend, auction, stock price, or freelancer feeds and updates when we are online. Also there are sites which log you out if you remain inactive for some set period of time.

Unfortunately, keeping on hitting F5 key to refresh browser tabs or clicking the refresh icon is tedious and inefficient at times. Or we get caught up in an activity and altogether forget to refresh. But Google Chrome, the most popular browser- and so powerful- does not have an auto-refresh feature as yet.

In this training, I guide you on how to use a safe extension tool (Chrome’s own recommendation) to execute tab (web page) auto-refresh at your own set time, for as often as you like.

The Steps

  1. Log in to your Google account (e.g. Gmail, etc)
  2. Go to Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore
  3. In the Search window, type in Tab Reloader, and press Enter
  4. Locate the reloader entitled Tab Reloader (page auto refresh) (offered by tlintspr)
  5. Once you find it, click the blue “Add to Chrome” button
  6. A pop-up appears asking you if to Add Tab Reloader (page auto refresh). It also notifies you that the extension can read your browsing history. If Ok with that, click on Add Extension.
  7. The extension installs and a gray circular arrow icon appears in your browser’s toolbar.
  8. Go to the page you want to apply auto-refresh to.
  9. Once on that page, click gray Tab Reloader icon and set your reloading time as per your liking.
  10. Once you set the time, Switch on to Enable reloader- by default it is usually disabled.
  11. Repeat steps 8 – 10 for all the sites you’d like to auto-refresh, setting time to reload as desired.
  12. If you need to re-adjust time in your reloader, you’ll switch to Disabled state first before you effect any changes.
  13. If you no longer need the auto reloader and you need to remove it, you’ll just right click on the icon, and like in any other Chrome extension, a menu will appear. Click “Remove from Chrome”.

Alternative Chrome Extensions for the same job include:

  1. i. Super Auto Refresh Plus
  2. ii. Auto Refresh
