Yesterday - after publishing my tutorial on custom attachment file type icons - I received an interesting question from one of my followers ... He was looking for a simple method of adding additional uploadable/allowed file types to the default media uploader ...

Needless to say, there is a solution ... But let's start with the beginning ...

As we all know, when you upload images, audio files, videos, etc through the media uploader, Wordpress will automatically embed the file if it is a supported file format.

However, Wordpress will allow you to only upload a few commonly used file types using the default media uploader.

You can check out the allowed file types and extensions in the Wordpress codex here.

Hence the logical question: what's the solution if you want to upload a file type that is not allowed?

Well, you'll have to insert a tiny bit of code, in your theme’s functions.php file ...

Sounds scary? Relax, it's easier than you think ... and I've decided to create this short tutorial where I will show you how to add/allow additional file types to be uploaded in Wordpress.

Interested?

Let's do this!
