This tutorial will learn you how to make a jump link on a page by adding a HTML code. Also called an anchor link.

You use this when you want to give your visitos the posibility to jump right away to a topic on your page.

The code for the link is:

<a href="#Anchor">link text</a>

The code for the anchor is:

<a name="Anchor"></a>

Where the word Anchor is filled in has to be exactly the same to be able to make the jump.

We are now going to make a jump link on my kids art website.

Hi Loes, I'm learning how to use jump links. Thanks so much for this!
I use the comments widget. Is there a way to make the title of the widget the jumping off link and have it go to the main page where my comments are?
Reply
Loes Premium
That´s a good question, I don´t know, I have to dive into this if that´s possible, I will get back to you
Reply
Loes Premium
Yes, I think I have it:)
go to your comments on the dashboard > quick edit
Enter in the box URL any URL you want, and it'll go there
See screenshot
I hope this is what you meant:)

Thanks Loes, I was looking at the 'Recent Comments' widget that you get to under
'Appearance' and then 'Widgets' on the back office menu.
If I put the code in the 'Title' bar it will show up on the sidebar, won't it?

Thank you for this tutorial. Is there a way on how to anchor link from a different page/post?
Reply
MozMary Premium
yes, just highlight the text you want to make a link, click the add link button on the menu at the top of your page, and in the box that opens up insert the link from the page/post you wanted to link to, he will cover this in the training

A little help if you don't mind. I inserted these codes, but when you click on the link, it takes you to the very bottom of the page. It doesn't stop at my text. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I am linking it to a text location and not an h1, does that have anything to do with it not stopping at my designated text? thanks,
Reply
Loes Premium
No, you can link to any text you want. Is your text anchor not that far from the bottom? And when you scroll one line up, you can see it?
Reply
GolfSpecialt Premium
The text is not that far from the bottom, I'm still building out this page. And yes, if I hit the up arrow once or twice I can see my text. The little anchor icon does show up next to my text.
Reply
Loes Premium
Perhaps when you add the anchor a little higher?
Reply
GolfSpecialt Premium
Thanks I'll try that as well as keep building put the page

oh dear, i'm feeling as though this should be simple but I aint getting it!, can someone talk me through step by step until i get one working..... please
Reply
Loes Premium
You can try it at first as a back to top link, place the first code on the bottum of your page, with the text "back to top">"back to top etc
and place the second link on top of your page, a name etc.
and see what it does
Success:)

HI Loes,

I am trying to do this on a post that I am writing but when I click on the link (in post preview mode), I doesn't do anything. Here are screenshots of my code
http://screencast.com/t/ka2Gn9cIbjQo (this is the first part - I tried this for 2 lines I want anchored)
http://screencast.com/t/N3RxzQK4BeB (this is where I want it to go, just showing the first line)

Any suggestions?
Reply
Loes Premium
Yes you need to place the second sentence Little Tikes N Cook Kitchen BEFORE the end tag </a

I love this training and I have used it well! However, I need help...
How to you add a link from the menu that essentially is a jumps into the middle of a page. For example: separate menu names that go to the same page: Price, services, location

Thanks!
Reply
Loes Premium
If you want that specific jumps links, it is not just one you are going to use, you better install a plugin
Reply
jwill303 Premium
Ok, thank you.. do you recommend one?
Reply
Loes Premium
Just go to plugins > add new> search for "anchor" > see if it is compatible
I have searched, but none of them are compatible with my site.
So that's why I wrote this training.
If the plugins are not compatible with your site too, please come back here, and I will see what is posible:)

Thank you very much maam, I was doing the same thing as someone else and it kept going a line too far down so i finally added in the   between the anchor html and the place I wanted it to land and it goes right where I want it now.

Hi Loes, Hate to keep bugging you, but you seem to be my "Go To Person" here at WA. Hope you don't mind too much. haha.

Anyway, I have studied your "Anchor Link Training" and it works great. Well almost. :-) I seem to be jumping to one (1) line beyond where I expect to go. It's not a big deal for me because all I have to do is scroll up one line. But my visitors might get confused. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Can you help me out?
Reply
Loes Premium
It goes a line to far? then you have to place your anchor higher:)
Reply
Larry_T Premium
Thank you Loes. I misunderstood your tutorial. I thought I had to place the "Anchor" directly in front of the "Text" that you wanted to jump too. I tested your directions and moved the "Anchor" a line higher. Guess what?? It worked like a champ!!. Thank you again. I guess this is what I get for doing my own thinking..haha.

Another excellent tutorial that I didn't know exist. I think I may need it soon ... Thank you!

If I am not wrong, all these 'anchor text' (am I using the correct term because I am not very sure what is an anchor text) help in SEO ranking as well?
Reply
Loes Premium
At least the usual anchors you place from one to another page on your own site will help, the internal linking you add.

Another question : Can the jump link be used on article 2 pointing specifically to a particular section in article 1 instead of referring article 2 to the general URL of article 1?
