So you want to write a post for your webpage and have been putting it off because it seems like a huge task. Lets apply the Slice the Salami technique to writing a blog post.

Each person writes in his or her own way. Some people like to create and outline and others like to write free-form. It does not really matter how you like to write – it just matters that you can break it down into steps. If you can’t break you task down into steps then you cannot apply this technique. Lets look at how someone might write a blog post:

Your big task is: Write a blog post

Lets break it down into steps:

  1. Decide on a topic
  2. Research the blog
  3. Find your keywords
  4. Write the blog
  5. Edit the blog
  6. Find pictures for your blog
  7. Post the blog

Now this might not be how you write a blog post. Maybe there are steps there that you never do or do in a different order. It does not matter – just write down your steps!

OK. How do these steps feel to you? Do they feel doable – can you see yourself easily doing them or do they still seem big to you.?

If they still seem too big – break them down again! Lets try it!

Break any task up into "bite-sized chunks."

Absolutely spot on. I'm always breaking things down like this. It's absolutely true, breaking task down into subtasks and subsubtasks makes it so much easier. Then you have just one tiny task to do at a time.

More specifically, when I write blog posts, I break them down into chunks, and when I'm writing each particular chunk, it can be helpful to imagine that a friend has emailed me asking me to explain it to them. So then I write it as if I was writing my email reply to them explaining it. The thing is, the people reading our blog posts are just normal people. None of it needs to win a literary award. It just needs to be readable, helpful, friendly, conversational. We're not writing a doctoral thesis, we're just writing to normal people in plain English.

Even what I have written here in reply to you is fine for part of an article, and it was really easy to write.
