Hi! Thank you so much for your help! I want to make a menu that says shop. So, I know how to create the menu now, in order to put the products that I am promoting from my posts into the shop menu, do I take the url from the products and put it in the url on the menu?

Hi Marion, I've created, on my menu, "shop". What I would like to do is put under there, the products that I am featuring in my posts. How do I do that? I did do a plug in for woocommerce. That seems to be more for if I have a store and I am selling something myself? I just want to put a product that I featured from amazon or chewy.

Hi again Marion,

This is another very helpful video of yours. I am thankful to have found it.

I am still working on changing my theme and I want to utilize this drop down structure for my new top menu.

While watching the video, I got to thinking about the moving around of the posts and such, and am wondering about the initial permalinks created when the post was first published.

If we are moving a post from one place to another, do we need to edit the permalink on each one?

For example, if you had a post originally published at marionblack/wordpresstraining...

and now you've moved it to marionblack/popularposts/wordpresstraining...

did you have to go into 'Edit post' and change the permalink to reflect that new location?

I may have missed something (or might just be tired!) but I'm a bit confused on that part.

Thanks for all of your help here at WA,
Cris

Don't change the permalinks. Use custom links to add individual posts to the menu.

Hi Marion. Clear, efficient and precise as always. many thanks for heaps of information packed into a brief period of time.
I am wondering if there is a way to have new posts automatically added to a top menu list of categories or if we have to add each one manually as we add the posts to our website?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Andrew

If you have a category listed in your menu then each new post that is assigned to that category will be added to the category results page. The category results page looks similar to the usual blogroll but it only lists the posts in that particular category.

This easiest way to explain this is for you to visit my website marionblackonline.com and access one of the categories listed in the menu.

Thanks Marion,

I 've learned some more new stuff from you on here. I was looking for help in getting my WA Review post title displayed at the top menu on my website but it's too long and I was wondering if a few words could be used to refer to my WA Review post title on the top menu without changing the long post title that I have for my WA Review especially when someone clicks on it (the top menu) to read my WA Review. I guess I could put it as a sub-menu under a top menu item eg Popular Posts or WA Review. Any further help, Marion will be much appreciated!
Thanks so much for your help as usual!

Some people use "My #1 Recommendation" as the title in their menu but they have a much longer title on their post. You can give it any name you like in the menu without it affecting the actual title of your post.

Hi Marion,
Thanks again for this training video. I had to come back and brush up or rearranging my menu.

What do you do when you get too many blog posts. I hate to just delete them, what is best? Archive them? I have a monthly archive widget, I could put that in the sidebar, is that the only solution?

I wondered about how to use a menu tab to take people to an archive of posts. I know I have seen something like that, but i have no idea how to do it. I think I could create a page and paste all the urls/links...do you know a better way to do that? Maybe put an archive widget on a hidden page somehow?

Thank you!

Chas

I don't like archive widgets. I use categories to help people find my posts and I also have a search box at the top of the sidebar. When you've got more than 10 posts you need to use categories and tags.

Hi Marion,
I have to read that link over a few times. Thank you!

Yes I've got about 70 posts and things are getting a bit messy. I did compress my drop-down to about 5 menu headings and split up the posts. That helped a lot, thanks to your video.

Sounds like categories will work just fine, and great tip on the keyword headings!

I was told that tags don't help for much anymore, but I agree with you that they will help others find our articles, but they leave the breadcrumbs. It does look cleaner without them. Is it possible to hide the breadcrumbs, or is that what the search engines pick up?

I will likely have another question or two.

Thank you, for all this video training help you have created! I love being able to pause the video, and go step by step!

Big authority sites have hundreds or even thousands of posts. They can't put them all into the menu so they use categories and tags to help people find what they're looking for.

Marion, Marion, Marion!

I've just watched your vid. Drag and Drop Menu, and I think it's the best video showing how a professional manipulates the WP Menu Editing facility.

I've been overly cautious, doing one thing at a time and using kid gloves fearing I will break the thing. You have shown me how versatile and flexible WP menu editing is.

I have one question. Say you build out your website and sometime later you decide you want to rearrange the site structure, e.g. change menu item order, change which page the blogroll will be shown on, changing what was previously a top-level menu item to a submenu item etc.. Can you simply go to the menu editing facility and change the structure to your heart's content or do you need to consider certain things to avoid doing harm to your site such as possibly breaking links or other issues.

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

George

Well, George, you're timing is just perfect. I recommend backing up your website before you make any major changes such as editing your menu and updating. My new video has just been published and I actually edit my menu somewhere in the middle of the video. Enjoy!

Watched the video

I am very new to website building and Affiliate Marketing. I looked at your tutorial for the drop-down menus.

If I want to add menus across the top with submenus I have to create some posts?

For example, I want my menus across the top to read Main Meals and the submenu to read
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Then underneath those items links to the recipes: breakfast recipes, lunch recipes, and dinner recipes.

In order to create those menu items, I have to write the recipes as posts or pages right?
I know that I have to play around with the "look" of the website.

I also did not see any training regarding categories. But I watched your tutorial do you have any others on menus and widgets? I watched Leo's videos but his menus are different from mine

You can only add stuff to the menu after it exists so your first step is to write some posts. Just follow Kyle's lessons and complete all the tasks as you go along. It will soon start making sense to you.

Imageguy55 Premium
The other thing that I noticed was that the posts are getting archived.
That's a problem it is not making sense.
Is there a way to delete the website and start over? Because I know that I tried different things and played around with the menus and I don't know how to get back to where I started.
But thanks for your help.

Marion, I know this question keeps coming up but I am continually going in circles. If you look at my site www.mydoggiebiscuits.com I have a "rightside bar" with 3 pages listed below. Under those pages articles, dog blog, and nutrition I would like the most recent post to show up under each page. Currently, I have the Rightside bar as a category widget.

Hello Marion

Thank you for sharing this video, you make it seems so easy been, struggling just with a few post, so going to see the video again but wondering is it always the same set up or can it vary depending on the theme you have chosen for your website and still a bit confused about the difference between a page and a post, but again thank you for sharing

WordPress Version 4.9 has just been released in the last day or two. I believe there is some difference in the way menus get set up. I haven't had time to look at this yet so what's in this video may not be exactly the same as what you see in your website. And the appearance of the menu will depend on the theme you've chosen.

Hi Marion

Thank you for the training.
I was able to create the drop down menu as you explained.
If I scroll down my blog roll and hover the mouse over the menu the drop down menu is behind the text showing in my blogroll.

Do you know how to bring the drop down menu items to the foreground?

For more background on my question. I am using the Ameno theme.
I used the code below in the Theme.header to fix the menu to the top of the screen.
<div id="banner-nav" style="position:fixed">

Marion, that was so helpful. I am going to now re-organize my website. I was really floundering. I created a side menu of categories but Kyle suggested that I use a drop-down menu. I looked a couple of other videos that confused me more, so I am so glad I was sent this training. :)

Excellent video training, Marion, thanks! I am in the process of remodeling some menus on one of my sites from the ground up. I decided that the content could be better organized to be more user friendly...so, naturally, I began with you!

I do have a question for you. What I would really like to do is have post and/or page menus on my sidebar that are different on each page. That way, when accessing a sub menu from the top of the page drop down menu, only the relevant pages and post will appear for that category in the sidebar menu for that specific page.

Does that make sense? I can see there are lots of sidebar plug-ins, but I thought I would ask you if there is one you have had good success with that would do this.

Thanks! :)

It worked perfectly! I can't believe I've been struggling with this since last week.....but, it's my own fault for having waited so long to ask for help.

I didn't quite understand the URL and tag thing you went over, so I'll have to watch that part again. But my site is definitely coming along!

Oh, but here's a question: What's the difference between a category and a post.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
A post is an individual article, a category is a group of posts on a similar subject https://codex.wordpress.org/Manage_Categories_SubPanel

You could have a category called "Reviews" and all your posts that review products can go into the Reviews category.

Marion,

Thanks for the great, simple training for working on my menu. I did not think I would live long enough to need to sort things, but now I do.

After learning how this stuff works, haveing a training enables me to use it easier. I just had to get to the spot that I understood what you were trying to teach me.
