What is a niche?

A niche is simple, it is an audience. An audience looks for stuff online, for example, what are some of the last searches you did in Google. These are ALL niches.

In this video I am going to help you UNDERSTAND what a niche is, how to come up with niches that you are interested in, how to choose a niche...and if you can't come up with your own niche, then I give you a "plan of attack" for getting your business up and running in a pre-selected niche.

Here is what you are going to be doing within this tutorial:

  • Understand what a niche is
  • Finding your very own niche
  • Choosing your initial direction
  • Finding and search for affiliate programs
  • Using Answers.com to uncover niches
  • Understanding Affiliate Bootcamp

A couple of resources I leveraged within this training that you can use for your niche research. These include:

  • Amazon.com
  • Answers.com
  • Google.com
  • Magazines.com

If you have any questions about niches or what direction to go, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you out.

I have a niche question? In my chosen niche, a customer clicks a product from my website and for example, is forwarded to amazon.if the customer don't pick my product but buys another there.will I still gain a commission since the customers still buying a product from amazon?

Yes. As long as you were the last link they clicked and it is within24 hours. That's the length of Amazon cookies. Even if your link was for a book and they bought a washing machine you would get commission on the washing machine.

I have several ideas for a possible niche. Does a website only have the ability to center on one niche or can it be evolved to include several different ones? Say you are interested in the occult but also health and wellness, Can you make your site available for both? Why do you have to choose between a niche of your own or the affiliate niche? Doesn't the more you cover help bring traffic for multiple things help people learn about and buy other products that may be related but not necessarily apart of the initial niche they were looking for? Should you have more than one website to affiliate with different niches? Does this help make more affiliate marketing money to you by including yourself in different programs and companies?

I always give myself as an example, my niche is new horse owners, they come to my site because they have a question or a problem about horses they don’t want to wade through posts about sales funnels, is such and such a scam etc...

And vice versa if I am looking to make money online I don’t want to read about how horses teeth need checking yearly! I wouldn’t stay on a site long if that is what I found, I couldn’t be bothered and it would seem strange.

I have one banner add for WA, saying this site created through WA, if you want one like it click here. That’s all.

Hope that helps

Hi! To start with PLEASE only do one narrow niche. It's more work than you can realize right now. Later you can start other websites for each niche. The reason for a single niche is that you are trying to be seen as an "authority" site for your niche. Think of Amazon, what are they an authority in? Nothing is the answer. They are just a big unpersonable retail store online.

Think of how you would feel if you went to an online baby clothing site and suddenly saw posts about Wiccan topics. Would you think something doesn't match here? Probably yes. And, then you'd be off to look at something more on topic.
Best of luck to you.

To add to the answers already provided, your one niche can have several ways of monetization and several products or services to promote. One niche doesn’t minimize your earnings in anyway. You only need one site to make 4 or 5 figures. It’s also highly not recommended to do more than one site to start as your work will be spread thinner and your results for each will be much slower.

You can start with a narrow niche like how to train your dog, and everything on there will be specifically about training dogs.

As your site gains authority and traffic then you can branch out to proper diets for dogs, or dog carriers, etc.

Why focus on a smaller niche to start is so you can rank easier with more specific keywords for your niche. Keywords are your site’s lifeline as that is what will drive traffic to your site.

You will learn more about everything as you keep going with the lessons and you’ll understand more why the courses are structured the way they are.

I hope this clarifies it more but ask more questions if you still have them. :)

I grew up in 90's and my one and only thing that I can remember is that I spent a lot of times playing video games and up to this day I still play video games but not as often. Can this be a niche? I know this is a very broad subject. Can someone helped me here?
Reply

Sure, it is an interesting niche with passionate audience. Video games niche is too board but you can find hundreds of subniches.

You can start with a specific genre of games, for a specific console, ages, or anything else you may think. Some sites are based on one video game. For example, I played Football manager some years ago and I know there are many websites and some forums only for this game.

If you narrow it down it can be a niche that’s for sure. You need to think about what it is these people want to know, have questions about or want more info on. Also can you and do you want to write 100 - 150 posts about the subject?
Reply
As I am my whole life a jeweler, that niche won't be difficult for me. But I also know that there is a very small market for that and the transportation of those products is very very hard. So I also have a problem to choose a right niche that fits me.
Reply
Bryan8 Premium
I would suspect, from the number of jewelry stores that I see, that the demand is huge. If you could do a blog that features posts on exactly what to look for to find quality jewelry, sizing, popular gifts, etc I would expect you to do very well.

Sure, there are lots of stores and sites out there, but how many will tell you the truth about what to look for? Mostly they will talk up their own product. Be different. Don't try to monetize at all for the first six months or so and then only on maybe 1 out of 3 posts. People will get to know, respect, and trust you. When they trust you that is when the magic happens.

Do some keyword research in Jaaxy (under research in left sidebar) I suspect that you will be surprised. Make sure to check for terms like how to buy quality jewelry, 10 tips to buy the best engagement ring, etc.

Best of luck to you. I think you may have a gold mine on your hands!

Hi Kelli,
I can understand it could be challenging to start off when you have so many ideas come together and you ended not knowing which to choose as your first project. I would suggest to list them down and choose one that you think you are most passionate now. The rest will be good for your next website.

Focus on one niche now so that you can focus on building the site. Do some keyword research and see if there are people looking for the keyword or phrases around the niche you have chosen.

All the best to you.

Very interesting video. As smart as I think I am (Hah!) the video opened my eyes on where and how-to research for my niche. I have so many interests it has been mind boggling to even think about selecting a niche market.
I now have a plan on how to find my comfortable zone in selecting a niche that's fairly close to my heart.

Really helpful video here, guys. I love the concept of doing what you are really passionate about. So my passion is music and I was thinking about traditional musical instruments around the world. Like for example in Bulgaria a traditional instrument is the bagpipe, in Greece - bouzouki, in Hawaii - ukulele and so on and so on. Does this sound like a good niche? I personally had searched for stuff like that and I was wondering if this is a nice idea?

Perimenopause support - I don't think that's overly broad, but I am interested in hearing from anyone who might think it would be good to narrow that. I'd feature supplements, books, and possibly certain educational programs for women (i have noted that a few have affiliate programs for referrals to their courses).

I love sports especially football and I really get into the details of the game. Looking at each position matchup to see who has the advantage, going over a teams favored defensive scheme compared to the opponents offensive scheme. With how big fantasy football is as well as people just betting on games, is it better to go towards football sportswear instead of something that helps picking fantasy players or teams each week? It’s always been a hobby to looker closer at the game and has helped pick a high percentage of fantasy winners and even higher game winners, but wasn’t positive if that is a good direction to go compared to Football gear to wear.
Reply

Why not use your expertise on this in-depth football knowledge and help people make a decision on which team to bet on? Make your content help them making the decision for the next big match to come up. If you manage to do this correctly people will start paying you for your next estimate ;)

I have one niche that I am certain of and I have already started with the website. However, apart from this, in the future i would like to focus on a more personal blog (let's say, different ideas for spending valuable time together for the whole family). I was wondering: what do you think about using such a personal blog also for online marketing? I have many doubts about it but I see that others are doing it successfully. What do you think? I mean in such case I am really personally recommending something. Doesn't it make me less reliable in general if people know that I want to sell them something?

Powodzenia

I believe you are starting to understand the concept of choosing a niche (theme of topic of your website). The niche should be targeting specific audiences. So choose one that you have passion about and create your content targeting this audience.

You can definitely headed the fitness industry direction, I would narrow it down to something more specific as you have. As you are probably aware of, the pre-workout niche is massive an itself, as is every facet.

You can also heading to make a direction, but again you want to narrow it down like you have. You've actually done a good job of narrowing down to specific niche, now it is a matter of choosing one as your starting point for your business.

I really look forward to working with you Nell!

As a lawyer, I have an interest in civil rights, animal rights, disability rights, and service dog use and training. I'm not sure if it's too small a niche to attract enough traffic. The broader niche I like is pet care, which I know is a large area. There are service dog services/items that could be advertised on the first type of site, and of course everything pet for the second. I will do more research but at this point, I'm more interested in staying away from legal content and creating content that is more generally related to pet care. Thoughts?
Reply
onmyownterms Premium
I think a narrower niche like service animals is better than 'pet care' - for one thing, you'll be doing the community a HUGE favor, and if intimately familiar with the subject matter, you'll quickly gain authority and market share for your site.
Reply
goobygirl Premium
Thank you. It's a narrow area of interest but there's a lot of legal misinformation out there and there are products and services to link to such a site. It could also be a larger topic niche such as disability in general with links to medical equipment, content on disability-related topics, including legal topics, legal referral services, etc. With 20% of all Americans being disabled and an ever-aging population, disability continues to be a big area.

I would think if I could create enough traffic to the site that lawyers would be interested in having a legal referral link with me to gain new clients. The one thing I know about people using service animals is that there are very few lawyers who even know the law, let alone practice it, so a lot of legal issues that arise while using a service animal are self-help or handled through over-burdened government agencies like the DOJ or a state's civil rights agency. As a service dog user, trainer and lawyer, I have a unique perspective on what happens in denial of public accommodation/housing issues involving service animals, disabilities, and how someone might be able to help themselves in a situation in which they cannot find or hire an attorney.

So, there's a lot of topics to write about and I think I would easily be able to research and focus on the top issues affecting service dog users and/or people encountering disabilities quite easily. I could probably write all day long! LOL

Thanks Harvey! The animal species used as service animals in the United States is now legally limited to dogs and miniature horses. However, the related area of assistance animals (animals belonging to disabled individuals not trained to specifically assist a disabled person, but providing comfort in housing situations), therapy animals, and companion animals (pets) includes more animal species and I can comfortably write on all those legal topics and explain and explore the differences. So you could have technically an assistance animal that is a hamster and would like to know how to legally keep your hamster when you are mentally or physically disabled and your landlord wants Hammie out!

I'm really excited about the area and can see another site or perhaps related topics on legal pet issues such as dog bites, when the state can take and euthanize your dog, and broader legal topics on pet/animal ownership.

For example, I was shocked to learn my state has a law that allows anyone to make a report about a dogfight without actually witnessing the fight, without being injured or incurring damages from the fight, resulting in the dog being seized and euthanized. So you could literally hear second hand about a fight and have someone's dog taken and killed!

I am sure there are many people who have dog bite and legal issues resulting from stray dogs, dangerous dogs, and the like. Not to mention, there's been a lot of news lately about people traveling with service animals and pets on planes (restaurants and places of public accommodation as well) and all the issues there, including how do you protect your service animal around people with untrained pets/owners.

I'm not sure about building an online user forum, but I know that there are thousands of complaints to the government for disability discrimination regarding service animals. A user forum would allow people to help each other and provide a basis for legal referral to law firms or state agencies. So it could provide an outlet for frustrated users and also build a community (and followers!). I see it as possibly become very heavy on the admin end so I think it is something I would grow after putting other parts of the site together first.

nathaniell Premium
I agree with @onmyownterms here Wendy. I think "legal issues for people with service animals" is a very interesting and specific niche to work with. Or even "legal issues for pets" or "navigating the world with a service animal"...any of those three ideas could be good niche website ideas.

My personal favorite is "navigating the world with a service animal" because it's a more personal tone, and I think legal writing would be dry and boring. You're the attorney though! Maybe you find that interesting :)

My only advice would be to avoid running a forum right now. People can comment on your articles, and you can discuss with them that way. Once you start a forum, it's really easy to get bogged down with spam and other issues when you let people run their own discussions. Modding a forum takes time, and usually can only be monetized with Adsense, which doesn't pay much.
Reply

Thanks for the insight! I've written three posts so far and am going to outline how what topics I want to write first. There's going to be more chatty posts and then the nitty gritty legal posts, which people need when they get denied service. I really would love to see a site that is an example of how I would use affiliate links and embed them into the style of the page. Not the technical aspect, but more of how it looks and how to make it seamless. Do you have any example pages?

Lots of potential, think big. You're on the right track...its all about staying consistent with sharing what you know and keep adding content to your site/social media. You can earn a great deal of money when you have a following and then incorporate courses (either your own or those you recommend) and being an affiliate for higher ticket items such as sewing machines, fabrics, etc. Let me know if you want to bounce ideas around, you can always PM me. I thought I had my niche figured out, but now after watching this video, I'm not so sure. I am very passionate about history, and am constantly learning more. My plan was to start a "On This Day in American History" type blog. I figured that the Amazon affiliate program would work well with this if a reader wanted to delve deeper into related books or videos.
With this blog, content would be very easy for me to generate, but is the idea too broad? Is my idea too focused on content and not enough on an actual product?

Hello Jason, it is a good niche. There is a lot of Modern history that has not surfaced yet. It can work but you have to determine the areas in American history that you will include in your posts. Will the areas be all inclusive or focus on what is already in the history books or will you search out the history that is not being told. I think that would attract me as an avid reader of truthful history, not the history told from the conqueror’s perspective.

Today most history books read like a John Wayne movie, It is being told as if no one else but the hero, with the white hat saved the day (his) story. Who are some of the heroines of history, how did Blacks contribute to American history apart from slavery, how did the Aboriginal people contribute. These are the stories that are not being told and yet people are seeking knowledge on these.

Re: Keywords, it is not your niche. Your keywords should justify your Niche. Niche is much broader concept. You should know about your interest, your audience, your product etc. Your keywords help people to find your blogs or content in search engines which you are going to write to help your audience.

I'm looking at providing practical training for people with a focus on critical thinking and technology for non-techies so they can avoid scams and marketing traps. I can provide the training in person to groups, or online via webcasts/webinars, or stand-alone courses a customer can buy online (which should then generate passive income). Part of problem is that the audience I really want to reach, especially for critical thinking training, is unaware of their need for it or is actually averse to it because of their postmodernist ideology.

(reminds me of Jurassic Park) I would like to be the one to bridge the gap with education. I've been a medical marijuana patient for a few years and have unleashed some hidden talents.
Interested in knowing what you think...Thank You in Advance.

That sounds great! I think that would get a lot of search hits. Narrow the topic and search, as there is a ton of stuff posting every day on this topic, esp. with the news and all. I would hone it to medical uses or marijuana education as far as your title or key words, etc. Great idea; and definitely something very much needed. I am sure you have much to offer.

I'm thinking about creating a site promoting healing crystals (spirituality). This is a niche I've always felt passionate about throughout my life.

I know this is a business platform and all and I don't want to dwell into this type of stuff to much on this platform. Any thoughts would be appreciated by someone who's into this though.

Yeah, that is most definitely the direction you could head with your niche. If this is something that you are passionate about, definitely go for it Johan!

Here is my thought process at the moment regarding a niche - " I am interested in Hollywood movies, PC games, and Psychology. But aren't there already a bazillion sites about those topics online? How do I stand out from the crowd and get visitors to come to me?
Any help would be appreciated.

A lot of people feel the same as you do myself included but as Kyle says the are billions of people on the internet these days, and you only need a fraction of this to earn money on the internet.

I would pick the one you are most interested in and follow the training, I am sure you can make it in anyone of these.

Ok. Im looking for a opinion on this. From anyone really. Im thinking of more than one income stream. But For a store. ecommerce. The fodelsmirst one. For a niche would be a hobby store. Models, rc cars, and airplane, train's, ect.
And also on the affiliate marketing side. This is where my question is. Where I need opinions. I was thinking of one website. Where I would have pages for categories. Well to separate The different items that I am promoting. Like a education page, a digital product page, a page for material, physical items. ect. A affiliate marketing super store. But not to big. Not to wide of range. of course I would have to create a custom funnel. But then I can promote several items in one website. My website. and of course the site that the product owner has with the product. allot of them do. But I can also source my own product to slip into the super site as well.
It is just a thought in rough now. A way of having several affiliate items in one website. Without advertising it that way. Its hard to write it down the way i'm thinking it. I guess my question is. Is this just the stupidest thing heard of. Or how hard would it be ( knowing the targeting problem ). To get traffic to a affiliate supersite. If a custom funnel is designed for it.
Another niche of mine is. ( Real home businesses. With great income potential. And little to no startup investment.). That will be a BLOG site. To help keep people from throwing away their last few bucks on some scam, or something that doesn't work. There I said way to much.
Thank You for reading. And your opinions.

(pilots pride).

I would suggest doing the training and associated tasks for a narrow niche website. Once you see just how much work is involved in just a narrow niche you might not be so keen on trying to be the next Amazon....

Sorry but I would not second the idea. I would suggest choose one first that really you can start fast. See, Google normally see a website from the theme of topic the site present. If you build a website with many different and not related items, which particular niche that the site will present?
You already have many ideas. I would suggest break them down into different niches instead of combing them into one site.

My opinion.

:)

Yea. I would almost have to make up a key word that would describe a mix of things. Your right. The funnel would have to atract people from each catigory and suck them all in to one site. could be difficult. So yea. I will stick with the conventional way. And I will just stick some links in my blog site here and there.eded
Thanks for the insight. Thats what I needed.

I have a financial background and experience in alternative financing. I would like to start working on the site which will educate people how and where to choose the best source to loan money - peer2peer financing, installment loans, title loans etc. I did a quick research on google and it seems there is no tough competition in terms of educating and navigating people. On the other hand there are plenty of fruitful affiliates programs from established lenders.
Guys, I would greatly appreciate your insights and opinions on this topic.

Sure, this could definitely be a direction you head. I would narrow it down to ONE of these concepts within the finance world, I would choose the one that resonates with you the most. ;)

I will be working the same niche I have been interested in for a long time now. Small business is the genre I have been involved with for quite some time now. The difference is that now I will focus on New Businesses, I would then like to take it a step further and specialize in Tools and resources for people who are starting or thinking about starting a business. I have knowledge on the subject and I find it interesting and exciting. I also feel that I can provide a valuable service by helping people find the information and tools they need on one website rather than having to scour the internet and guess at what they need and where to find it. By choosing to go with this niche I also have an opportunity to keep learning and apply what I learn to my blog and my marketing content.

So yesterday I was thinking about doing world/ethnic foods as my niche. However, I think it would be too hard. Another think I love is coffee. I am now thinking about doing coffee mugs, cups and tumblers as my niche. Since I'm new and this is my first try at this, I'd love some feedback. Do you guys think this could work?
Reply

Most anything can work as a niche. Can you write 2- 1,000 word posts per week about this niche for a year? If you can you can probably make it work, BUT what is your commission going to be on a coffee mug? Most Amazon products are in the 4-5% range. How many would you have to sell to make it worth your while?
Reply
Thanks! Answering the question, can I write a couple 1000 word posts per week is a good way to think about this. I think I'll probably rethink my niche a bit. There's so much to think about when starting out with all of this. I guess if I don't do something related to coffee, I'll end up with something dog related.

Dogs are always a popular niche! You had mentioned world/ethnic foods as well. If you could write this much about that subject you could probably sell, specialty ingredients, special cooking tools, and even appliances..... Think of the commissions on say, a Sub Zero refrigerator. You could also create and sell your own recipe book(s), or have a membership site with cooking videos. Limit your niche, but expand your thinking within that niche!

Best of luck to you!

I'm a bit lost about choosing my niche.

Basically, there are tow directions I am considering. I know the subject should be something you're passionate about, but for me I think I need something I'm kind of interested in and want to learn more about, because otherwise I'll be just way too involved and my inner perfectionist will keep kicking in.

Eventually I want to understand internet marketing well enough to run my own successful website promoting my own wire sculpture and illustration, but I have a feeling that for me it would be easier to learn on something less emotional for me.

My two main ideas are either just going with the bootcamp or picking out a niche somehow related to wire sculpture, art and illustration.

1. Starting out with the Bootcamp.
The good thing here is that I am really interested in the subject, and I will obviously naturally have new content as I learn about the stuff. And I'll probably have max support with this program. However, I'm kind of woried that this niche may be just way too competitive, and maybe I should choose something more narrow.
But in general, blogging about my learning process and (hopefully) success feels like a good way to enhance the learning process.

2.Starting out with an art/wire sculpture/illustration relatedniche.
The good thing is that this is something I'm interested in, and the audience I can eventually gain in a niche like that is likely not only to bring me affiliate profit, but also to be interested in my own sculpture and illustration I am eventually planning to promote. So it's kind of a double win in a way.
But at the same time, I'm worried that everything art related is way more emotional for me, and I'm going to have big perfectionism attacks while creating content, so there's a big risk of getting stuck.

I am really overwhelmed by this, any ideas?

I really like the idea of doing wire sculpture. I can see you doing youtube videos and lots of illustrations as well. Accept the challenge to not be perfect. You are going to learn that when you start out writing the content for your niche, you will want it to come from your brain through your fingers perfect and it is not going to happen.
Dare to be imperfect.. When your future customers see this they will not be intimidated.by a very niche subject. It will also look more natural. I think.

I would like to advice you to chose No 2 first.
Reason is simple, once you progress with it. You will use it for Bootcamp as a success example

I have a lot of houseplants, both indoors and out.Would like to make that my niche, but am trying to make it a little more specific. For instance, which plants prefer to grow indoors, even which fruit trees might thrive in doors, etc...then there are the ones that do much better outside on a porch or in full sun. All comments appreciated!

Yes, you could certainly head in the"house plants" direction with your niche.

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

I hope I'm understanding this correctly. Choosing a niche should be something I'm interested in, yet I don't need to have working knowledge about. Or should it be something I'm interested in, have a small amount of knowledge about but would like to learn more? I would like to promote Travel through WV Fly Fishing. Do I understand that would be considered a market? I would need to narrow that down to say Fly Fishing Rods?
Thanks for any input.

Sounds like you've narrowed it down already. Why not promote fly fishing tours and from that you can specify best rods, flies, reel, clothing, accommodation etc for a particular tour.
The opportunities are endless

I have a couple of passions that i could use as my niche and that's what's giving me sort of a hard time trying to figure out which ine to go with. Im a barber student and im currently in barbering school to get my masters barbering license. Barbering is a passion of mines and has been for many years. So i was thinking since im already in the that field and it's a passion of mines that i could promote barber products. Im also a dog lover, owner and breeder so i was thinking on promoting dogs products.

Im thinking about my niche being living green. Iv not always lived green but i would like to. And its something id like to learn more about too. Is it a good idea to have your niche be something you dont know much about? Its my passion to be able to live green one day, just never startded. Maybe this will help me out. I could advertise eco friendly products. I could blog about what products are better for our enviroment, the products i use, and tips for living green.
What do you think?

WOW Great training ..Got tons of questions ? I love to read thats def one of my top niches but with kindle and im sure at most id get maybe $1 for everybook i sold it seems like id make very little money if i chose books as my niche ? ...i could choose mens clothing since summer is almost here but im used to buying clothes for BIG MEN ? Im great cook but cant sell food online ? I guess my main question is you can onlt have 1 niche per website so how do i choose right one thats gonna make me money fast ?
Reply
Bryan8 Premium
There's really no way to make quick money. You need to create your site, load it with content, get traffic to it, build trust, then try to get them to buy through your link. All in all most people don't earn steady income for at least 12 months.
Reply
MichaelS2018 Premium
Yes i understand that im just talking about for example selling maybe 50 books in a month at $1 each my commission.... verses selling atleast 100 pieces of mens clothing ...workout or summer ...at atleast $3 each commission is def alot faster and alot more money per month !!

I think I finally found my niche and I'd like to ask your opinion. I want to help ladies who are in their 30s to better understand and accept the changes that their bodies and mind are going through on their way from adolescence to an adult life. Ultimately, I want help them find the right balance of skincare, healthy diet, sport routine etc. Obviously I'd start with one of the topics, (most likely skincare) and if it goes well I'd expand to the other ones later on. Think of honest product reviews, articles with relevant info, maybe interview with few ladies who are going through this phase and how they are dealing with it, etc.

In order to give myself enough room to expand but narrow it down I thought about the domain name beautyinyour30s.com. Do you think that this is too broad still? This particular term doesn't get that many searches per month but there are lot of topics around it that do get searched. I'm hoping that with the right keywords in the website content I'd be able to rank high enough. I don't know how else to call this particular age and I want to avoid something like becomingawoman.com

I think its a great domain, catchy, easy to remember and google (and other search engines) will be able to see the connection between your domain and the posts/products you write about. beautyinyour30s - so anything to do with beauty or health will fit...google doesn't need exact word match to understand your posts

I'm thinking of the niche "Living food" which includes all the healthy eating that keeps nutriments such as :
- juice extractor
- food dehydrator
- sprouting seeds

Is it a niche too broad ? Do I need to choose only one category ?
Or due to the fact that it is a very specific subject it is OK to do a niche on that ?

Thank you for giving your opinions.

Salut Adeline,
