Best practices and toolkit

You will find the Website Accessibility Under Title II of ADA here:
https://www.ada.gov/pcatoolkit/chap5toolkit.htm

Main points of attention

  • Do not use flashy colors or images, disturbing sight
  • Use readable fonts and pixesl
  • Every image, video file, audio file, plug-in, graphic, link, must have an alt tag and text descriptive. For those lesser familiar with the subject, check your media library and make sure the labels are filled
  • Add captions to videos and descriptions to audio
  • Create a link to videos instead of embedding it
  • Add a link to the media player download
  • If you use descriptive tables, use the <th> tag
  • Decoratives, do need no alt tags, nor description
  • ...

Those points of attention are easy to implement and to follow up

Hello Fleeky,

I was having issues this morning being able to open a new tab when i clicked on my link. Site support said it is because of the ada plugin so I disabled it.

I want to activate it again but when people click on the word here, it won't open in another tab. It stays on the same tab.

What do you think? I really like the plugin.

Strange, i do not have that problem... some themes interfere... hard to know what it is... you can also ask support of the plugin or the theme... or try another plugin...

Support said disable the plugin. That's the problem they said. I tried contacting the plugin but no real way to do that. Guess I won't be using it.

I might try another plugin.

Hello Fleeky,

It looks like I was able to fix it. I went back into the settings and disabled the one that said something about staying on the main page.

Then I activated it again. All looks well now. Now when i click on a link, it opens in another tab which is what I like so all is well.

Thanks again for this information. Hopefully Google notices as well.

Like some others commenting here, I installed the plugin, it was easy, and the blue disability icon on the upper left adds a touch of class to one's website(s).

I did disable the "Remove target attribute from links" option, because it is important for many of the links on my websites to open in new windows. By disabling that option, I was still able to get the blue icon, with options for the disabled, to show up on my websites.

I am not sure why enabling that option helps for a better experience for the disabled.

In my opinion, some of the Main Points of Attention that Fleeky presented in this training should apply to all website design, whether users are disabled or not.

In a single day, I run across so many websites that use very small text in addition to the text being a light shade of grey.

As I type this comment, I am at my laptop and not wearing my glasses. I can clearly see what I am typing due to the default text size, color and font. Excluding the font type, all text on websites should be of a dark color (preferably black) and at least a size similar or equal to the size of the default text for this discussion feature at WA.

For those who have to wear glasses to view a website, they should leave the site altogether if the text is of a light shade. No reason for them to squint their eyes, with glasses on, to read a webpage.

I'm so with you there! I don't understand why light gray text against a white background are used. No matter which theme you use, you can usually change the font color and size. There use to be a standard- black 14px. Font was default for Arial, but any sans font is suitable.
The nice thing about the plugin is it gives the reader an option other than to zoom in for bigger fonts.

I use Arial 12px for all my websites. By default, my themes use standard-black. I highlight my text, click on a darker black in my color picker box....that would be #000000; and this seems to result in a slightly darker black text rather than the theme black text default.

One of these days, when I find the time to search for instructions on how to change the default color in my themes, I will do so. Probably save me loads of time.

Some themes have a color setting
If not
You can add css

The default is different for each theme. Trends come and go, and even when the soft black is standard, I also ensure that the text color is true black - #000000.

Hey Fleeky,

This training is very helpful and easy to become compliant.

I have installed the plugin to both sites.

I will be encouraging others to do so because it is better for the eyes.

Being able to read content clearly is so important.

Thank you for this one Fleeky, much appreciated.

Blessings always
