Getting Akismet Spam Protection API Key for Free

Per Kyles recommendation, many of us switched off Akismet and over to WP SpamShield which works great.

But, I had heard a rumor that there was a way to get Akismet for free, so I thought I would check it out. Here's a quick walk-through on how to do just that.

Akismet has been around for a long time and it's the best if you wish to switch back.

Hope this helps. Thanks!

Many thanks PJ, but do you think it is better than WP Spamshield?

Personally, I do. But, Dave has raised a valid point below about the ramifications of a "personal" website versus commercial.

That's true :)

This was a good video to produce today. To build with this thread, I myself on some of my websites, have NEVER PAID for Akismet, and the service works as far as I can see.

This is due to the fact that Akismet sent updates for me to load. I would only pay for it if my traffic ever got crazy and I felt like I need the extra security but other than that Pj, it does what it is suppose to do.

Yes it will work, but using it outside of their permitted license amounts to theft, as I stated previously use at your own risk.

Taken from the plugin page:
"Keys are free for personal blogs; paid subscriptions are available for businesses and commercial sites"

What if you are using a key which was generated before they changed their policy??

I have had several updates but I probally could get away with just wp spamshield.

So far no one from there has sent me any types of warnings but I have no problem deactivating it for something else.

If that key is working, stick with it.

How can it be theft if Akismet gave me the key BEFORE they changed their policy? Do you know how many websites have these types of keys?

LOL! Good point. And, no, I have no idea!

When do you think Automattic changed their policy ! As far as I recall they were charging for a commercial licence a number of years ago. Many people overlooked this as it is easy to register as a "personal" blogger and obtain a key. I have no knowledge of when you obtained you original key and any relevant terms at that time. Not that it is relevant to my comment.

PJ is providing training on how to install Akismet TODAY so it is certainly their current licensing terms that apply. Just because one can get a key by deception (Not declaring that it is in fact for commercial use) does not make it right or valid whether it works or not.

I have worked with a number of software developers in a professional capacity and will never condone software theft.

I am sure Automattic would love to hear from you if you would like to take it up and discuss it with them.

No one here is condoning theft and I or anyone on this thread is trying to steal anything. If anything it is Automattics issue and not ours for giving out keys that work for both commercial and personal use without you being required to pay for them. Why would I contact them when everything has been working fine?

What some people do not realize is that I was on Akismet when it was just a donation site. It covered both personal and commercial websites and just websites period! Keys got dust on them man.

Akismet has always, as far as I know had this free option available for personal blogs etc. However, for commercial websites it is not free. Obviously as Affiliate Marketers our websites would come under the commercial category so people should not declare this at their own risk.

On saying that I have not heard of Automattric taking action against website owners for loss of income/
