I agree with John. I have done a similar mistake asking people to sign up from my WA referral link. They sign up and forget. It's human nature: you are less valuable when you go on asking. If you show reasons you are worthy, people will chase you!
Sometimes it's easier to attract than to chase.. recently, I hit 500,000 readers on Quora. Did I get them by asking people to read my stuff? No, of course, not - that's an insane amount of effort.
