Are Your Best Friends What's Best for You?

A mentor I had as a young man once admonished me to be mindful of who I associate with. He said there is a time-proven premise: you will wind up being the average of the sum total of the 5 people you hang around with the most.

You will talk like them (vocabulary size, word usage and inflection), dress like them, behave like them, have about the same level of education, possess the same level of ethics and integrity, and be similarly successful as them - in every way, be it financially, spiritually, or relationships-wise.

So you have to ask yourself, and be brutally honest. Take a look at your 5 closest associations. Do you want to wind up being like them? If so, great! Stay with that group. However, if you want more out of life than what you see those 5 (or any number of the 5) are getting or seem destined to achieve, then you will have to say goodbye to some or all of them, and find people to associate with that inspire you to greater heights in life.

Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.

Your mentor was right! As a schoolteacher I see it all the time. Excellent advice, but not always easy to do when someone you've known for a long time loses his or her way.

I agree with your premise!

Always a good idea to have a group of people that will push you to succeed.
