Help me with a gratitude challenge
A few weeks ago I became a counselor for a troubled man who used to be homeless but now lives in a group home for adults with mental health problems. My job is to help him and others transition to an independent life where they can thrive and live happier lives. Bob, not his real name, said he tenses up when talking to authority figures because he feels he is being bullied. I counseled Bob that one stress-management techniques that’s always with him is simply to breathe deeper and relax before answering. This way he’ll be calmer and lessen the chances of a misunderstanding that could lead to more stress . Bob said that was a good idea and he’d try that going forward. I advised him to do things that he likes such as listening to music and socializing with his peers to get his mind of things that make feel angry or anxious.
Bob said he was glad that we spoke and he felt it was a good discussion that gave him insights into how he could be misconceiving needed inquiries by authority figures as bullying. A couple of days ago I checked with Bob and he told me that he was doing much better since our conversation. He is a lot calmer.
I am also thankful for the experience because it also helped me realize all the things that I am grateful for. Thus, the inspiration for my series on gratitude.
Help me with a Gratitude Challenge
Reach out to someone and just express your gratitude for things they have done for you. It can be something prefound or something as simple as writing a letter. If you're game just say YES!
