A bit about me. My hobbies are photography, music, and art.
I have been self-employed since I left school (around 40 years). I have had a few businesses fail (bad ideas, bad timing etc). These have never been too bad I have just paid the business debts and moved on.
I have built and sold quite a few businesses before and my current business is over ten years old. I have always got by but never made enough money to really walk away from a successful business. They have always needed me to be there to work them. My last business was doing ok and I had five vans on the road but margins were low and it was really stressful. My wife and I ended up selling 75% of the goodwill for that business and now we work 20 hours a week each and earn all the money we need to get by.
Earlier on this year, We set up a property management business and this went badly. We had a vendor rip us off for our entire marketing budget and are now fighting to get it back through the courts. To compound matters, it turned out that the local market was saturated and even though we climbed to the top of Google searches with Adwords we still only managed a few incoming calls in the first two months. We had a choice of putting another lump sum in to keep it going or cut our losses. We chose the later.
I then started looking at internet marketing. I have always loved marketing and it seemed to suit me well. I have spent the last couple of months studying for around 20 hours a week and have done subjects like AdWords, FaceBook marketing, and landing page design. I come from a design and marketing background, my first business was a signwriting company.
I came across this site today and this looks like a perfect place to "earn while you learn". I am looking forward to seeing what I can do here.

Awesome goals Stuart! 20+ hours a week is a good start. As long as you're willing to put in the time and effort, you're going to reach your goals. Stay consistent and be patient!

Success is very cumulative in nature. Every action you take will add up to a much greater success. I can tell you that when you earn your first money, it will all become very REAL and it will lead to much more success.

Personally it took me a couple of months to get there (to earn my first dime), but by month 6 I was earning a consistent income. That is likely what your journey will look like...stay persistent and ask for help when you need it. I am in your "corner" every step of the way Stuart! :)

Thanks for your comment. I have earned money online before and I enjoy building businesses but I always make myself unreplaceable so that makes it hard to get away from the day to day needs of the business. It would be nice to set something up that does not require me to be there all of the time.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Thanks for reaching out. I do have a few questions. I am a bit stuck on a niche. I was thinking about something in the productivity space. I have used Todoist for a few years and rated in their top 10% of uses the other year. I also use Toggi a lot combined with Todoist. I could possibly promote WA in the same space.
The other thing I was thinking about was Thrive Themes. I have just started using them to design websites and although the learning curve is steep it is excellent software with a good reoccurring affiliate programme. The is also a lack of good courses or tutorials in this area. I do have a design background.
Also on the niche video is said to pursue setting up affiliate sites OR promote WA. Don't do both. Is this a "scattered force lacks direction" thing or is there a solid practical reason I shouldn't do that?

If you want to promote WA and work within the "make money niche", go through the Affiliate Bootcamp training. If you want to build a business within another niche, head through the Get Started Here training.

Focus on just one though. You are going to be much more successful if you focus on one business/website versus trying to do too many things at once. You can always diversify down the road and be involved in both.

And yeah, you could head in the "personal productivity" or "business productivity" niche. If these are passions of yours, by all means. ;)

Hope this helps you out here Stuart!

Hey Stuart,

It's me Jerry here again. I want to drop by personally because I just saw you updated your profile.

I'm really excited for you as you've found this awesome community.

Personally, I joined WA when I was 18 as a complete newbie. I'm now 21 and earning 4-figure monthly passive income, all thanks to Wealthy Affiliate.

So, you've definitely come to the right place to learn and earn from affiliate marketing.

I understand the part where you build a business but you don't have enough time and money to enjoy the things you desire. That's called a "business operator" not a "business owner" because the business still requires you to spend your time and you can't walk away with it.

Anyway, I'm sure you can turn your passion into a thriving online business with the help of Wealthy Affiliate, be it photography, music, art or any other passion/expertise you have. From there, you can build your own passive income streams.

And the most important part is that you're already experienced in writing, Facebook marketing, AdWords and landing page design. Those valuable skills allow you to have great advantage here in this business.

I must say building passive income stream is not easy though. A lot of time and hard work are involved. But all I could say is that the reward and benefits are worth the hustle.

For now, follow closely with the training here: You'll get more detailed guidance on how to define your niche and start building your website.

Just to remind you that you're not alone here. The whole community and myself is here to help. Feel free to ask whenever you need.

I wish you all the best and let's keep in touch, alright?

Cheers

Jerry

You should focus on one niche at a time. Promoting WA is just one of the things you can do in the make money online niche. There are a lot of things you can promote in the make money online niche.

For example, I'm in the MMO niche promoting WA, but I'm also promoting Thrive Themes at the same time because it is relevant to make money online (building websites). On top of that, you can also promote hosting, keyword research tools and many other affiliate programs you can find. But make sure you find a focus and not promote everything all together because it'll be very messy and the conversion rate will be low.

But I wouldn't recommend mixing up MMO niche with other affiliate niche websites because there's not much relevance.

Relevance determines your conversion rate. That's why they said you shouldn't do both together.

I hope this answers your question!

Thanks for your quick reply
I might try a producity site as my first build as I enjoy the topic. However I dont think the margins would be that good in that niche.
I am thinking about "how to start an online marketing business" as my next niche as I really enjoy using Thrive and the margins are great on that product. There are also a lot of other products in the online/ social media marketing area that I use. I have only been using Thrive for a couple of months so I still need to learn more about that product before I feel comfitable enough to promote it but I do have a small business marketing background so that should help. Thanks again for your great advice.

You're welcome! Just take note that the downside of building a MMO site is that it is a very competitive niche. So it will take a longer time to see results. That's also why it's not recommended for beginners.
