Good news for all. Announced last week, there will be more free images coming to you.

How much more?

2.8 million

Yes, 2.8 million high-resolution two and three-dimensional images

Who is behind this?

The Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institute and all its vast repository of resources.

What type of images?

These resources are from the repository of all 19 Smithsonian museums, research centers, libraries, archives and the National Zoo.

How can you use these images?

You can use, reuse and transform them into just about anything you choose - be it a postcard, blog post, T-Shirts or a beer koozie. Therefore, you can be creative with these images.

Where can you access these images?

These images will be released by The Smithsonian Institution from across its collections onto an open access online platform (Digital Depot) for patrons to peruse and download free of charge.

Why are they doing this?

The database’s launch is part of a growing global effort to migrate museum collections into the public domain.

According to Effie Kapsalis, who is heading this effort as Smithsonian's Senior Digital Program Officer, Being a relevant source for people who are learning around the world is key to their mission. They are prepared to be surprised by what people will do with these collections.

Show your ❤️💖💝💖❤️ for the Smithsonian.

This is the first time in its 174-year history, the Smithsonian has released 2.8 Million data and material.

All you culture connoisseurs, with niches that could benefit from these content, REJOICE!

I guess by now you would be curious how you can get access to it.

Here's the link. (Of course this is NOT an affiliate link)

Enjoy and don't forget to show your 🥰

As if it came out of the blue – after long 174 years.

Thanks, Stanley, for digging out and sharing such a beautiful and rare information piece along with the Link as well.

I am sure this will be extremely useful to all of us in the WA community.

Thanks once again Stanley and with best wishes,

ASOKE

Took 174 years for some of it to go public domain... Digital of course.

Better late than never – Stanley.

It's still a massive giveaway in the Public domain by Smithsonian.

Our heartiest appreciation must be with them for such a liberal decision making without any prejudice, for the benefits of the general public/knowledge seekers/data searchers and miners like us. It's commendable, indeed.

Thanks again Stanley and with best wishes,

Asoke

Yes, thanks to them for this big hearted and kind gesture of sharing with the world.

Took a look at some of the images and I see that a credit line is included, which I guess we are supposed to use. For example, for a picture of an African jar the credit line reads:

Purchased with funds provided by the Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program
13th-15th century

This is information on the actual acquisition of the actual physical artifact. Not the image acquisition.

Just had a quick look at the website. It was a real quick look but already I can see some fantastic images. They'll be some amazing content riding off this.
Appreciate the post and the link, saved it to my favourites so I can take a more thorough look later.

Need time to look through, glad you found some great images.

Good Morning Stanley,

It is great but I could not look as the page did not open, it could be my computer.
In return, I am sending you a link which I sometimes use, wrote a WA post about it in 2017. It is the World Digital Library.

Greetings from the south of Spain,

Taetske

Thanks, Taetske. I will look it up. I think some European museums are also looking into making some resources public domain.

This is so neat! I just read the information about it. Thanks!!!

You are welcome.
