Would a website containing resources to other things or the "best of" things be to broad? Could I choose say, 5 different topics to discuss (such as Tablets, online games, birthda

Seems like Eddie has ya covered.

Thanks for the props. Check out PastorTae's comment too though. Even if a person started more focused, I could see where they could pull off multiple niche's using subdomains.

I'll probably wait a while before trying that myself though. Just because I tend to become 'scatter-shot'. I just can't focus on more than one thing and do a quality job. ... and I have a day job :-)

If I was doing IM all day every day, I would probably see the multiple sub-domains as a challenge and try to phase them in more quickly to experiment. It sounds like a neat way to have your cake and eat it too!

I had a similar question. I wanted to have sections of 'Homestead', 'Software Development', and 'Internet Marketing'. The advice I was given is that - while I could do that - it would be more difficult.

In my case, all of those things relate to me, so I would be the brand/niche. The more I thought about it, I just don't have that many people searching for me :-)

I settled on starting with the Internet Marketing niche (promoting WA and internet/affiliate marketing 'things') because that's where my mind is at right now, and I don't have time to really focus in 3 areas anyway.

Hope this is somewhat helpful!

Eddie

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate the advice!

Hi Eddie, Reading over your comments again made me think...you are right, I don't have time to research so many topics! Maybe in the future!

Hello. This a complicated question. The initial impression is that it is too broad in the light of the WA emphasis on finding and focusing in on a niche. But there are three other perspectives.

1. There are many WAers who have multiple sites including me. You may want to have several websites. And the timing of launching them is a separate matter in the light of your time and training.

2. If there is a centralizing theme, then there might be a way to create synergy between all these topics. For example, I have multiple sites but one of them is like a central hub and I organize all them towards the hub.

3. Another way to look at it is through subdomains if you want to create a relationship between them. Here is a link to consider:

Hello! Thank you for also taking the time to respond.

I like option 2. However, I would need to create multiple sites. Or have the one site and discuss topics under the same theme, like kitchen appliances.
I never thought of option 3, because I didn't really understand it, until now. Thank you for that! So, I could add a few subdomains on related topics to my main domain.
I'm probably better off starting small, narrowing it down to one topic, which I still seem to be stuck on.
Thank you again for the advice!

Great. And I want to encourage you to take a serious look at option #3 because it might save you some money by not buying domain names. #3 is free and some have said that it helps with Google rankings to have subdomains. I am currently researching it. But for me, I already bought all those names. But still they say it's worth it to create subdomains. We'll see.

Thank you. I definitely will research it further. It sounds like the better option. So if I have my main domain, I can add sub domains thst contain different topics but in some we relate to my main domain or the purpose of my site as a whole?

yes, that's the idea. And the Google ranking comes from the fact that the subdomain is connected to the main domain so that the search engine ends up finding both.

Thank you for clarifying!! I really like that idea and think I could make it work. Baby steps...first I need to select my niche!

Great. If it works, please write a blog about it. I think it will benefit the entire community. This topic of subdomains is not talked about much but it should.

Ok. Once I decide to do it, II will let you know and I will write a blog about it! Thanks again!

Just wondering why they are not discussed. The use of them sounds like they may or could increase traffic to your website. Is that correct?

yeah. I'm not sure why. I've been here for 4 months and have not heard a peep about it. But if you type "subdomain" in the top question slot, there is discussion about it. It's a bit of a mystery considering so many here have multiple sites. My guess is that these people don't see a need to create synergy between the sites. They accept that they are completely different which is fine I guess. I really haven't run across people who are thinking about creating synergistic links between sites.

But one good WA member here, Gordon Appleby...a true marketing expert, advised me personally that if I had multiple sites that it's not a good thing for a visitor to be isolated on one site and not see the flow from one site to another. He understood what I was doing and really emphasized integration.
Caveat: G. Appleby did not mention subdomains.

It was first mentioned to me by a CEO of a hosting company.

Subdomains is the latest research that I am doing. There are other ways to create this synergy.

I'm new to WA, just over a month now. Sub domains are new to me.
You seem very well versed on WA and on the topic of creating synergy with or through the use of subdomains. I am glad you responded and provided me with a new, alternate option.
Thank you to Gordon Appleby for his advice which ultimately led to "sub domains".
From this I have 2 options:
To create a website containing resources on different topics, the different topics will be my sub domains. Or to create a site containing one topic with related sub topics, the sub topics will be my sub domains.
Again, always best to start small, then work my way up.
Hope to chat again with you soon PastorTae!

Regards,
Karen

Sounds like you are on your way. And consider following "Gappleby" - he is a true expert.

Yes, I will. Thank you!

You are also quite an expert!

no...no....only 4 months. I did build my first site 10 years ago but didn't do much with it except adding content. Here at WA, I feel like I learned a whole new world of creating websites and how to rank them. It's been great. Thank you for the kind words.

He really is. I think that's how he got into the Top 50.

Thanks for the great idea, PastorTae!

Thank you. But the ranking is simply about social activities such as helying people. I try to do that when I can. Thanks

You did a great job, provided excellent advice and motivation. Thank you!

Thank you. Blessings on your endeavor
